SIX BANDITS TO BE
HANGED OCTOBER 24TH
For Slaying Bank Messenger in Canada
Last April.
Montreal. Sept. 30.—Six men, mem
bers of a bandit band that last April
slew a bank messenger in a sensational
$142,000 robbery, will be hanged Oc
tober 24th. five judges of the court of
appeals decreed today.
One of the condemned, Leo Davis, may
escape the. noose, however, ns two jus
tices dissented concerning his appeal,
wherepon his counsel took advantage
of the right to carry the appeal to the
Dominion Supreme Court.
Davis, with Tony Frank, Louis Morel.
Frank Gainbino, Mile Valentino and
Giusseppe Serfina. had appealed from
the deatii sentence imposed several weeks
ago. This appeal was dismissed today.
They were convicted of having shot and
killed Henri Clereux. chauffeur-messeng
er pf the Bank Hochelaga, in an attack
on his money car. A seventh member
of the band, Harry Stone, was killed in
the attack and a second bank employe
was wounded.
The dissension on the Davis appeal j
was based on recent testimony by Slorel I
who toid the court that Davis had not I
been a member of the bandit band and
had not shared in the loot.
Charlotte Man Sued By Trust Company
Char'otte, Sept. 20. —Action was in
stituted Monday by the American Trust
Company against Thotnas J. Payne,
former industrial bank officer and
realtor, whose whereabouts are un
known, seeking to recover the sum of
$17,650 which defendant, it is alleged,
owes the institution.
A warrant of attachment has beeu is
sued against his property here return
able October 27.
Payne has been away from Charlotte
for six weeks, being last reported as a
guest of the Grand hotel in New York.
The International Federation of Uni
versity Women has a total membership
of 22.000,. representing twenty coun
tries.

they die. They believe It possible
that a new party has just been
horn, but they doubt If either of
the older parties is anywhere clear
to death.

the Republicans have settled
down definitely to conservatism,

Deepest Point in Ocean Found Near the
Japan Coast.
Tokio. Japan, Oct. I.—The lowest
known point on the earth’s crust, the
deepest known trench in the ocean, lies
about 145 miles southeast of Tokio.
This discovery, made recently by the Jap
anese naval survey ship Manshu. has
been announced by the navy authorities.
The new “deep” niea,sures 32.636 feet,
or more than six mile*. It exceeds by (
548 feet the hitherto greatest known
ocean depth, the famous Maritanne J
trench in which the United States naval
ship Nero is 180!) found 32,088 feet off
the east coast of the island of Mindanoa
In the Philippines.
Mjte manshau’s “deep” apparently lies
at the bottom of a precipitious declivity
descending sharply about 100 miles from
the southeastern coast of the main island
of Japan. To the Japanese the first
interest in the discovery lies in the
seismic possibilities of this < trench so
near their coasts. The sharpness with
which the ocean bed plunges a few miles
from Japan is held by scientist to be a
contributing factor to the severe earth
quakes which visit this part of the
j country.

and heavy property damage, with apr
ious interruptions to railroad service
and industrial activities were reported

Pennsylvania as a result of flood con
ditions after 48 hours of heavy rains.
Roads blocked with debris, bridges

much livesstock. closing down of mines
and other plants and the hooding of
cellars were mentioned in most of the

comes to electing a president.
A candidate, to be elected presi
dent, must get a majority of all
votes cast. ■
With three pretty evenly bal
anced parties, no candidate ever
could do this. That would mean
throwing the election into the
House of Representatives every
four years. And the House, also
divided into three more or less
equal groups, would deadlock every
time, too. So the Senate's vice
presidential choice would be. really,
the presidential choice.
The ifeople, in short, wouldn't
vote for the president. They'd
vote for the vice president for
president.

ABOLISHING the electoral col
lege, which some have sug
gested, wouldn't help matters
a bit, either. A popular vote can
split quite evenly three ways, so
that no candidate has a “majority
over all,” as easily as the electoral
college can.
The only alternative Would seem
to be to.let the plurality winner
take the Job, and that would mean
having a minority president aU
