In one of the best though most hectic ! contests ever staged in the city of Con ■ cord, the Highs beat Kannapolis Highs ■ Friday night by a score of 44.41, the ' winning points being scored in an extra ■ five minute period, the score was tied, . 40 all. at the end of the game. Both sides played an excellent offensive ' game and both sides put an equally poor • defense. It was a matter of regularity for Concord to put in a marker and then 1 have Kannapolis immediately afterward toss oue through the hoops. The last five minutes of the contest became a fren ' zied struggle for supremacy, with the spectators jumping up and down and yelling at the top of their Inugs. The game started with a rush. After a foul shot Concord, with as pretty a bit of team work as ever put up iu this place, made two field goals in rapid suc cession, only to be stopped when the Kannapolis captain called time out. They seemed to lose some of their pep as a result and the score became tied. From this time on through the first pals. there was never more than two points differ ence between the two teems the final count of this beriod being 18-18. Between halves. Coach Fanning slip ped a few bugs in the ears of his chil dren and at the opening of the second half the locals seemed to liav ethe game on ice. At oue time they were nine points in the lead only to Have Knnuaj)- olis slowly edge lack toward the even mark. With only sevn-il seconds to play. Johnson, captain of the visiting team, eluded alll guards and placed the ball in the basket making the score 40-40. Things looked bad for the locals in the beginning of the extra period. A foul shot placed Kannapolis one point in the lead. Then Alanager Jarratt. despite the fact that he had split his head in a collision shortly before, rose to the heights of glory anil drippled the length of the floor for a basket. A moment later Cnpt. Easley pocketed another, which made the final score. Both teams displayed good team work. For Kannapolis Gilliam and Johnson looked best. Jarratt and Harris stood out most prominent!/ in the Concord ag gregation. Kannapolis Concord Killiam (!) Jarratt (11) Gilliam (1) RF. Jarratt (11) Smith (8) T.F. Liueberger (It) Johnson (11) C. AT KUVANLS MEETING Mr. Scovil Talks on “Christian Citizen ship.”—Solicitor Long Makes Brief Talk. At the regular weekly meeting of the Kiwanis Club Friday at noon, the Rev. Charles B. Scovil. rector of All Saints Episcopal Church, made a talk on “’Christian Citizenship” which was great ly enjoyed by all members. ■Mr. ■teovil jwiinted to the rteeensity of J setting the proper example for the com ing generation. One of the main things an altruistic spirit and as an illustra an althuistie spirit and as an illustra tion. the difference between the Pharisee and the Samaritan was shown, the Phar isee leading a religious life and yet miss ing the best that there was in life be cause of his self-centered attitude. Following Mr. Scovil's talk. Kiwanian 7.e b Long, of Statesville, solicitor for this district, extruded New A’ear’s greetings to the Concord club. Brevard Harris, newly elected presi dent, presided over the meeting. Tiie program was in charge of E. Boyd Grady I and the attendance prize was won by , John S. Palmer. Lather Hartsell, Jr., | was appointed to have charge of the i meeting next Friday. 1 Court Ad jo tuned Until Monday. ] The Superior Court wound up its erim i iual cases early Friday afternoon, heard | the report of the grand jury and adjourn i ed to meet Monday, at which time the i civil docket will be heard. Several grand juries , In recent months have recommended that the passage way be built, but so far £pthiug definite in the matter has been done. Under the present-Arrangcments Sheriff Caldwell either has to bring all of the jail defendants into court at the same time or send ** deputy to the jail each time one of the prisoners is wanted. The arrangement is very unsatisfactory, say the men wlm spend much time iu the court room, ami the run-way would great ly facilitate the work of the court. It has been suggested that the run-way connect the second story of the jail and the court room. The two buildings are practically on the same level and it would not require much money, it is believed, to build the passage way connectiug them. If the run-way is erected, it is point ed out, Sheriff Caldwell or one of his deputies, could step from the court room to the cells in the jail iu a minute. That would mean the prisoners could be left iu their cells until their cases were call ed and then be returned to their cells in short order at the completion of their trials. That would eliminate any chance of the prisoners escaping aud would make it possible for the sheriff to conduct his office during court week with less ex pense. as he now has to employ deputies to guard the prisoners while they are in the court room. To Consider Having a Trade Day. A meeting of the Merchants' Associa tion, the Chamber of Commerce ami any interested persons has been called for Monday evening at 7:30 o’clock tp con sider the matter of a Trade Day. Hicks, decided to have one day each month when special values will he given. This plan is to be presented to the meeting Monday night for the con sideration of the member. If approved, dates will be announced as to the be ginning of the new plan. At the Theatres.
