Hoover Jr., son of tho secretary of commerce, and Miss Margaret Watson of San Francisco will be-married June 25 at Memorial Church, Stanford University. <r The wedding Is the outgrowth of a col lege romance. 1 Secretary and Mrs. attend the wedding,; Why DePaolo Decided to Buy a Butch. Peter DePaolo, youthful winner of the memorial day 500-mile automobile race at Indianapolis, Ind., spent a day in Flint, Michigan on his way to Altoona, Pa., and purchased a Buick car. i DePaolo’s story as to why he decided to buy a Buick is a novel one. While he was preparing for the big race he gained the friendship of Bill Alexander, of the Marvel Carburetor Company, who was at the speedway in the interests of his company. Bill had a Buick fifty five, and during the week previous to the . race used it to tow the rnc/pg car from ita garage ,to the speedway for practice spins. DePaolo took such a liking to . Bill’s valve-in-head Buick that when he , w»m. liis laurels together wkh the $38.- 000 in prize money, he decided to buy ,one like it. I The superstitions under which men who risk their lives often place thein ; selves Was humorously told, by Alexander. “On the' list night before the 500-mile 'grind, someone backed another large car up to the garage to tow the DePaolo car ,to the track, but Pete would have none of it. ‘Where is BUI and his Buick?’ he asked. ‘l’ll nor allow anyone else to tow my car at this stage of the game. -I, don’t want to be jinxed by changing 'tow-horses in the middle of the stream.’ “Pete tods a young son twenty months old and for luck he has a pair of little Tom’s shoes tied to the front of this car.” DePaolo expressed himself as being proud of his new car. “You see, 1 bought a rcasouably priced car,” he said) “and now people won't be 'going around saying I made a little money and am now squandering it.” DePaolo appeared inclined to take his .honors modestly. He admitted that i( took a lot of courage to drive in all races of that nqture and said that all drivers .would agree with him. “If there is one thing I owe my suc cess to,” he said, “it ik that I am always ‘ around to oversee what goes on at gll times whMe my car is concerned. You know you must have everything right all the time. In this game where your life is at stake every minute you have to know filings are right. You can not be in a fatal accident and go hurtling through sitece nt a speed of 100 miles an hour into eternity, ami then go back and bawl someone out for doing the wrong thing; .Consequently, I always want to know that everything is right and the best way to know is to do ft yburslf.” Dennis G. Brimmitt, the Attorney Gen eral of the State, was speaker of the House of Representatives in 1010. He presided'over the house when it voted on the; equal, suffrage ajngndntent, at .the speWffl serirton of 'IB2O.
