Leslie Bell is spending the day in Raleigh on business. Shower for Mr. and Mrs. Jones Yorke. Thursday morning dawhed bright and clear, with no clouds in the sky. No body dreamed of a shower. Still at 11 o’clock as numbers of people were walk ing down Cnion Street they were forced to enter Airs. Zeb Aloore’s house for shel ter. It was not oaly storming but raining down “pots and pans.” Every body seemed to know it was going to shower except one poor child. She was crouched up in one corner, and it just seemed as if all of the phower was meant for ifer and on each .raindrop was a little verse, saying just how to use' it. In some mysterious way Airs. Zeb Aloore and Mrs. Joe Hill were responsi ble for the cloudburst where “pots and pans” are mentioned. It includes every available utensil for a kitchen. After the storm had ceased a wonder ful salad course was served by four dain ty little maids. Misses Htidlows Hill. Jane Aloore, Lucy Anne Howard and Alartha Rogers^ Sooq the sun came out and the Indies hurried away leaving the beautiful porch gay with its pretty flowere and one lady especially grateful for the much-needed shower. X. Social Event at Kannapolis. The Midway Home Demonstration Club met with Mrs. C.< C. Stqnestreet Wed nesday afternoon, July Bth. : Twenty six members were present. The spacious reception half and par lor were thrown en suite and gracefully decorated with lovely gladiolis, sweet peas, zenias and sunflowers. The subejet of the meeting was ‘Des serts.” Miss Alattie Lee Cooley gave an interesting talk on desserts, after which she demonstrated a delirious pudding. The hostess served ice cream and cake assisted by Misses Alene Stonestreet and Katherine Price. After playing several Interesting games the club adjourned to mee at the koine of Mrs. Winecoff at the August meeting. Return From Wedding Trip. CUT IN FEDERAL TAX Favors Maximum Levy of 25 Per Cent on Combined Normal and Surtax on Net Income. Washington. July 9.—Reduction of federal taxes by at least $200,000,009 was advocated today by Senator VV'at son, of Indiana, n member ,of the sen ate financ committee. He favored a limit of 25 per cent for the combined normal and surtax on net incomes, but Van not prepared to specify any surtax fates he would support at the next con gressional- session. Predieting that 4 under f existing law the nation's existing bonded indebtedness would be reduced $5,500,000,00 by 1935. he also declared himself opposed to granting any funding terms to debtor nations more lenient than those given Great Britain, with the possible excep tion of an extension of time for final settlement. Any Concessions in principal or interest rates, he said, would cause great dissatisfaction in England, and probably require negotiation of new terms with that government. Mr. Watson, who is chairman of the interstate Commerce committee, pre dicted that the next sessioin would sec Jittle action in railroad legislation and expressed opposition to the enactment of compulsory consolidation, holding "* that any attempt in that direction would be The railroads are. in iis opinion, working out among them selves a satisfactory consolidation ar rangement, and should be left free of congressional interference in solving the problem. Only One Woman in Landis Case Pul Under Bond. Salisbury Post. ' In the Landis abducting and kidnap ping case heard in the county court Tues day and in which Goldie Alay Alilts and Carrie Honeycutt, two young white wom en, were the defendants, probable cause ivas found as to only one -of the women, Goldie Alay Mills, mother of the child al leged to have been abducted. The other woman, Carrie Honeycutt, was exoner ated by Judge Coggin of any complicity in the affair and the case wfls stricken off the docket as to her. The Afills woman's appearance bond was fixed at S2OO which was given. Auction Sole Here Tomorrow. The Peck property on Church street, will be sold tomorrow afternoon at 2 at auction, the sale to be con ducted by Linker & Barnett.
