SOCIAL PERSONAL
' Informal Picnic Supper.
Members of Trinity Reformed Chnrch
gave an informal picnic supper and
, social Inst night, honoring llev and
Mrs.. Frank L. Fespermnn and son,
James, nnd Rev. and Mrs. Sterling W.
Whltener nnd sons. Sterling nnd Donald.
Rev. and Mrs. Fexperman went to
Japan in 101!) and after six years of
labor in the Sunrise Kingdom nave re
turned. At present they are nt home
with Mrs. Fesperman’s people, Mr. and
Mrs. G. A. Fisher on Tribune Street.
They are both of Rowan county and
have mnn.v friends and acquaintance in
Cabarrus county outside ofthe Reformed
Chufefc.
Rev. and Mrs. Wliitener went to
China the same year. They have recent
ly returned and ate at the present time
with Mr. Whitener’s people in Catawba,
county. The Whiteners are visiting Rev,
and Mrs. W. C- I.yerly till Nazareth
Orphans' Home Day Thursrday.
The picnic supper was spread inside
the East Corbin Street School building
at 7:30 o'clock. Every one had oppor
tunity to meet the guests while partak
ing of a hearty supper- -\fter such fel
lowship, all gathered .in the auditorium
■ of the school, where the congregation now
worships, nnd heard messages of .interest
from these missionaries., They. told of
sonic of the more interesting things and
thtis made the life in Japan and China
mqre real. After 10 o’clock the good
, wishes of each and every one were
spqken to the gueats. Rev and Mrs. W.
H; Cnusey of Virginia, formerly pastor
ftf f .Trinity.congregation, were .present
and took part in the social festivities.

bell Cline. Mrs. Richmond Reed, and her
guest, Mrs. J. F. Hurley, of Salisbury;

Sir. and Mrs. W. B. Brown were hosts
at a bailee Tuesday night at the Mer
chants and Manufacturers elub honor
ing their guest. Miss Mildred Straude, of
Amherst, Va. About fifty persons were
present at the dance. Music was fur
nished by a local orchestra.
The affair was one of the most de
lightful of its kind given this season.
Lucy Cole Durham.
Dr. Plato' Durham and Mix. Durham,
of Atlanta, are receiving congratulations
on the birth of a daughter, Lucy Cple,
July 30th.
Dr. and Mrs. Durham have been mar
ried nineteen years. Mrs. Durham was
formerly Miss Lucy Cole, one of the state's
I prettiest tmd moss .charming young
women'. Dr. Durham t\‘aft a former
pastor of Central Methodist Churrfi here,
and he and Mrs. Durham have many
warm friends here.

Miss Alice Slater Cannon, of Salis

Mr. and Mrs. A. Jones Yorke returned
Tuesday afternoon from Warsaw, where
they spent the week-end witti Mrs.
Yorke’s mother, Mrs. L. P. Best. They
were accompanied home by Mrs. Best and
her son, Lucius, both of whom will, re
main in Concord for several weeks.
Miss Thelma Crouch, of this city, is
spending several days in Charlotte as
the guest of Miss Gaynell Wright.

Miss Hattie Mehaffey Injured in Automo
bile Crash.
Miss Hattie Mehaffey was painfully,
though not seriously injured late. Tues
day afternoon when the cur in which she
was riding collided with another, automo
bile nt the intersection of Grove and
Union streets. Miss Mehaffey suffered
a cut head and bruises. ,
The accident occurred when Ray Ciine,
with whom Mias Mehaffey was .riding,
turned from Union into Grove. At the
same time. J. ft Kesler was coming in
the opposite direction on Union street,
and both parties failed to, note the other.
A crash occurred but owtog to the slow
speed at which the automobiles were mov
ing, the cars were not badly damaged.
Birthday Party in No. S Township.
Master Ralph Bradford, little son of
Mr. and Mrs. Jno. T. Bradford, gave a
party August Ist to his many little
friends, the occasion being his twelfth
birthday. Those present were: J. E.
Summers, Chalmers Emerson, Fred 8.
Horace, Harwell Boyd, Robert, Ralph
and Howard Seaford, J. O. and Gene
Mowrer, Johnson Irvin, Wilson, Harold
and Gilbert Johnston, Richard and O.

Dillard and Dempsey Poplin, Douglas
and Foy Craven. After playing games
of all kinds they all went home wishing

PICNIC TOMORROW AT *
NAZARETH ORPHANS’ HOME
It la Expected That 8,000 People Will
Be at Crescent Thursday. *
Tomorrow, •* the annual picnic day
for Nazareth Orphans’ Home at Cres
cent. This is the one big picnic day for
the Reformed Church, as well as for the
Osphnns’ Home. It is the one big picnic
day for the people of Rowan county and
a’so for the northern part of Cabarrus
nnd for Concord people.
The expectations are for at least 8000
people this year. Last year the estimates
ran above 7000. Each year the number
increases. Two features of the day are:
First, the address by Rev Paul 8- Lein
baeh. D.D., L.L. D.. of Philadelphia.
Dr. Leinbacb is the Editor of the Re
fqrmled Church Messenger, an able
speaker, a man of .earnest spirit nnd
conviction. He has been pastor of lar
ger Reformed congreggations in Eaton,
Pa., and New .Jork City. The second is
the children program in the afternoon.
This promises to bo one of the best ever
given .by the Home. The Home is pleas
ed to announce that the Auditorium is
now seated with very .good folding
chairs and will seat more than OOq,
This will be welcomed by those desiring
to heat; either of the programs at 11
a. in. 'or 2 :30 p. m. The Jackson Train
ing school band will furnish music.
The Bear Creek Church will have
their table lie .usual- This table is picnic
style nnd always the very best. The
Faith charge will have a stand and in
additioii will serve barbecued pig and
chicken. The Rockwell ohnrge will have
their stand as usual. These tables nnd
Stands turn over to the Treasurer of the
home the gross reciepts for the day—
less a little necessary expenses for the
purchase o' some materials. The income
on Anniversary day is near $2,000.
The semi-annual meeting of the Board
is held this afternoon. Rev. W.' C.
Lyerly of Trinity Church is secretary of
the board and is in attendance- A suc
cessor to Superintendent McNairy is to
be elected. The finishing of the building
program is the one big item of busi
ness. The $40,000 girl’s dormitory is
nearing completion..

a reply to the telegram sent Tuesday to
Frank D. Grist, commissioner of labor
and printing, asking him to locate the
offices of the State employment bureau
’ in Concord Should they be moved from
Charlotte.
The 'telegram from Mr. Grist to Dr.
Spencer reads: ,
“Wish to thank you for your telegram
and assure you unless Charlotte situation
adjusts itself satisfactorily I will be glad
to discuss further placement of employ
ment office at Concord."
