MORRISON AND BAILEY MAY BE IN NEXT ASSEMBLY If Mecklenburg Sends I'p the Ex- Governor, Wake Will Put in the Ex-Candidate. R E. Powell in Winston-Salem Scn- Kaleigh, Nov. 3. —Should former Gov. Cameron Morrison decide to come to the 1927 legislature from Mecklenburg he will be mighty apt to find his old friend and political p’ny mate, Joseiah William Bailey, in ie -ame body as a member from Wak The probability has been much dis cussed here since a rumor t’hat M Morrison was intent upon an act championship of things progressive a would seek to make his sponsors), effectual by serving a term in the leg islature. < It is no secret that had the last legislature submitted the question of a constitutional convention Mr. Bailey would have offered himself as the member from Wake. It is also pret ty well known that one reason the question was not submitted was be cause of a foor ciiat Mr. Bailey would be elected. At tile same time there was some consideration given the prospect that Mr. Morrison might of fer to represent Mecklenburg in a convention called to rewrite the fund amental law. Mr. Bailey would like nothing bet ter than to serve in the same branch of a legislative session with ‘Mr. Morrison. Mr. Morrison, if '.uious about coming to the legislature, would like no prospect less. Mr. Bailey today is probably the ablest debater in North Carolina. He is well ac quainted with the tricks of the stage and with most cf those used by the old school politicians. Mr. Morrison is a •tremendous speaker but he is no match in an intellectual* contest for Mr. Bailor. Little better evidence that Mr. Bailey isn't going to help gel out a candidate against Max Gardner. The Scales boom will never get much/ of a start, out of Washington, It C., (where no one votes), because it must always be subject to a microscopic examination for a sign of the Mor- T *® 11 motive power. Mr. Scales him self, if possessed of a great ambition to serve tne people of North Caro lina. would attract attention. He did as much when he served in the State Senate and championed the ill-fated resolution to ratify the Susun B. An thony (or nineteenth) amendment to the federal constitution. He took floor leadership, for a sixty-day pe riod, of a thing Max Gardner had been fighting for through the years. Concord Motor Co. | the Stingiest Person Tne New Y’ork Mirror makes a daily offer of SI.OO for each example of the stiugiest person: Here are some examples. Try to write better ones. The stingiest person I know is the j man who has a shapely wife and wow* 1 let her wear short dresses. The ‘stingiest person 1 know is j the man who lets his children play in j the -and in the backyard and tells j them it is the beach. I The stingiest person I know is the I woman xvbo puts oti her glasses when ! carving meat so that the slices will 1 look larger. | The stingiest person I know is ai man who gives a straw hat away in a blizzard. It had been bitterly opposed by Mr, Morrison atpl is strongly suspected of having had no little to do with the defeat of Gardner. In the recalci trant East pictures were circulated frr the purpose of showing Mr. Gard ner fnvoroble to votes for negro wom en. Morriscn made many votes be cause of the crude cartoon. Mr. Bailey has said recently that he will nor endorse Mr. Gardner un less the latter declares for a fair election low, He presumably means the Australian ballot. Mr. Gardner's county of Cleveland, so late as tlic 1925 session of the Legislature, con ducted the close fight for the adoption cf this law. The Gardner influence has so go nr rally been progressive in North Carolina that it beggars argu ment to link the Shelby man wit’s reaction. He won his political spurs as a progressive and he clinched his poiticnl popularity by declining to be radical about it. Governor’s Orders May Be Revoked. A substantial increase in state taxes, due to better conditions with business, moves State Superintendent A. T. Allen to propehsy that the bud getary decrease of 1925 appropria tions, amounting to five per cent., will be revoked around January Ist when the showing is sufficient to justify the or ! r from Governor McLean.
