Alia in.r.l, Press. The public has been treated in such a large measure to one side of tin- eu.se against N. if. Cranford [who is charged with cruelty toward I convicts working under him ami as being the immediate rails,- of Uiie I felonious killing of at least tfc,, of I the number, that it is well to lake liog.izanee of the fact that there is ! yet another side to the t hat j grave injustice is being done a ,-mjn , wln.se guilt is far from being e, (ab- I lished. I In the outset, there is; atone in Stanly who would deny the right of . bring heard to any man whether convict or not. There is r.o man who would shield a person who is even thought to be guilty of the things charged against Cranford. And the wave i.f indignation now sweeping over the entire county include the best business men, farmers and representative''citizens ,-f the county. ! Up to this time there has been no trial of the charges, and judgment ,should he reserved until the ca is ( tried. t The fnct that the state's wits, -iv jure ex-convicts, and that they have | been adjudged guilty of . various ( I forms of violation' of the lawwsli ,u'.d offer in itself no prejudice to tli state’s side. But when witness,, of that type are produced to establish u statement of farts which, ui.eu ‘ pited against of um. irs tiened character, the testimony• ihey | offer must necessarily be discredited and discounted in a large measure. Cranford has s nrgely characterized the activities of those working up the ease against Cranford that the state lias np panint y over looked ins side v.tth such a distortion of truth that the unprejudiced mind can not accept the statements with ranch degree »f •redulity.
