Several months ago the prohibi
tion enforcement unit was cut al
most half in two in the district com
posed of North Carolina. South Car
olina and Georgia, of which Ben C.
Shnjpe, of Charlotte, is head ad
ministrator.
It believed that later on the |
force would be increased and there \
are now 300 applications in Mr.
Sharpe’s office for these jobs. It was
announced last week, however, that
the force would not be increased and
the 65 men now holding these jobs in
this district would be expected to do
the work.
The famous fight between John L.
Sullivan and Charlie Mitehell at |
Chantilly, France, in 1888, in whirfi j
the two gladitors battled 89 rounds
with bare knuckles, was for $2,5001
a side, or less than many “prelim” 1
fighters received now for ten rounds.'
*The present season has witnessed j
more mid-season changes in the minor j
league circuits than has been the case I
in some years.
