The West Jefferson P.-T. A.
met in the dining room of the
W. J. School Cafeteria Monday
night, January 6, in its regular
monthly meeting. Mrs. Herman
Haire, president of the organiza
tion, opened the meeting and the
minutes of the previous meeting
were read by Mrs. Porter, sec
retary.
An open forum was held at this
time to give members a chance
to discuss ways to better the or
ganization and raise funds to help
meet some of the more urgent
needs of the school. As a result
of the discussion Herman Haire,
Mrs. R. C. Ray and Mrs. Earl
Graybeal offered to furnish cots ,
and blankets for a sick room to be :
used for students who become j
sick while at school and it would
not be practicable to send the!
child home at that time. Other j
members also expressed them-1
selves as willing to help in any
way possible.
At the close of the discussion
the president introduced Mrs. |
Gertrude Vaught, of Jefferson I
high school, who was the guest
speaker of the evening. Mrs. ’
Vaught gave a very impressive
talk on the values of a P.-T. A.
and the need for unity between
teacher, parent and student. Dur
ing her talk she said that unity I
will produce better citizens of
our boys and girls and that there
is no substitute for cooperation
between parent, student and the
school.
After the meeting had adjourn- !
ed refreshments were served by
Mrs. Couch Brown and other
members. The P.-T. A. meets the
first Monday night in each month.
Programs are being planned by
one of the classes in the school
for each meeting. All parents
and friends of the school are urg
ed to be present at the next meet- j
ing and join the P.-T. A.

Announcement has been made
here of the marriage of Miss
Mabel Brown, daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. Major Brown, of 1
Nathans’ Creek, to William V.
Covington, of Lenoir.
The vows were spoken at 8:30
p. m. on December 23 at the home
of the officiating minister, Rev.
H. S. Benfield, of Hudson, who!
used the ring ceremony. I
The bride was attired in a gold
colored two piece suit, with which
she used black and white acces
sories. Her shoulder bouquet was
of white carnations.
After a short wedding trip the
couple will be at home in Lenoir.

Ray, of Whiteford, Maryland, an
nounce the birth of a son, Rich
ard Alan, on December 16, 1946.
Mr. and Mrs. Ray were formerly
from Ashe county.
