He has been Quite sick for some weeks. 9 Superintendent Holloway returned from South Boston last night. We are glad to know that his son, Brooks, is much better. - Mrs. Dr. J. C. Bradsher, of Berra, , is visiting her sisters, Mrs. Maggie Strayhorn and Mrs. Lucy Chambers, at the Winstead Hotel. Have you seen those splendid shoes at Hunters? Dr. Rapport visits Roxboro about every sixty days, all his work is guar anteed for three years, and in that time he will refit glasses without any extra charge. Beaman, Presiding Elder of the Wilmington district, is visiting his brother-in-law, C. H. Hunter. We are informed that he will preach in the Methodist church here Sunday. His many friends here were sorry his stay was so short. ' Mr. Joe Carver reported to us last week qujte a phenomenon. He cut open a very tine water melon an d found in the meat several letters of the alphabet which were 'plain and distinct. Mr. Carver said he knew that was a powerful melon yarn, but he had several witnesses, to it. ; - : Miss Ida Lansdell, who taught in the Roxboro Institute last year,, has accepted a position in the Cooper Lime Stone Institute, at Gaffney City, S. C, to teach Art This excellent 1 school belongs to the Spartanburg Association, The grounds for this school were donated by the late Pe ter Cooper," of that city. Miss. Lans dell has spent much time and money preparing herself for -her profession and is a most excellent teacher of art m ail branches! - We regret to see her : leave RoxbOro, where she will :be so much missed in the social circle, but we are glad to know that Bhe goes to such a pleasant position; She will carry with 1 her the best wisntfs, of a host of friends. : R. E. Long made a business to Smithfleld last week. -TY The Primaries.. . The Roxboro primary was held Saturdav as ber announcement The Con ven tion was cal led by . chairman Wilson. - ' On motion of R. H. Dowdy, Hon. J. A. Long was unanimously elected permanent chairman. On taking the Chair he announced the business of the (Don ven tion. - A. P. Kitchin moved that a com mittee of three, consisting of R. H, Dowdy, J. Scott Burch and W. M. Kirby, be appointed to select a list of delegates for t ho County Conven tion, and report some tp this body; This motion was amended so as to make five instead of three, and the Chair instructed to appoint the two additional men, and was'then adopted. The two additional names were Ab ner Clayton and Jno. R. Hamlin. The committee selected the following delegates: Jno. R. Hamlin, Ira T. Glenn, J. H. Clayton, W. M. Kirby.. Abner L. Clayton, C. B. Broods, 0 H. Clayton, Geo. T. Burch, J. Scott Burch, W. E. Webb, R. IL Dowdy, J . S. Bradsher, and J. A. Long. . There being no further business the Convention adjourned. This was much the largest atten ded primary we have seen in Roxboro for several years, and shows that our people are interested. BUSHY ,FORK TOWNSHIP. By order of the chairman of the Democratic Executive Committee of rerson county a convention was called August 27, 1898 at Bushy Fork in Bushy Fork township with A. M. Long chairman for the purpose of electing delegates to represent Bushy Fork township in the conven tion to be held in Roxboro Sept. 3rd 1898 to nominate candidates for county offices and members of the Legislature. The delegates were: Wesley Laws, J. A. Hicks, W. A. Warren, Jno. L. Phelps, L. C.Hes ter, C. R, Vernon, Robert Webster, A. V. Moon, and Albert O'Briant. The alternates were: C. A. Monk, J. W. Horner, W. F. Snipes, Dr. R. S. Baynes, S. G. Bradsher, J. D. Briggs, Jas. W. Whitefield, R. D. Malone, and J. L. Brooks. OLIVE HILL TOWNSHIP. We did not get a full report from this township, but we learn that it (was well attended, and was very har monious. The following is a list of delegates: G, A. Rogers, W. S. Dix on, W. G. Bradsher, W. M. Horton, John Wrenn, W. H. Moor, and N. L: Wagstaff. CDNINGHAM TOWNSHIP. The primary for Cuningham township met at Cuningham on Sat urday August 27. 1898, J. M. Bray, the former chairman, made a motion that J. M. Jories be elected perman ent chairman and C. R. Traynham secretary.1 Motion carried. The object' was to elect delegates to the County- Convention to be held in Roxboro on Saturday, Sept. 3rd. The follswing geutlemeh were elec ted delegates and alternates. The delegates were: W. M. Faulkner, J. M. Bray, J. A. Jones, L. M. Thayer. Alternates were: C. R. Traynham, J. J. Franklin, Jarrell Powell, and E. W.Carter. The names of the following gen tlemen were recommended for the different offices. Legislature, W. M. Faulkner; Treasurer, R. A. Williams; Clerk, D. W. Bradsher; Reister of Deeds, C. T. Wilson; Sheriff, S. P. Williams. Commissioners: WTT. Noell, A. J. Hester, and J. M. Jones : There being no further business the Convention adjourned. Dr. W. G. Bradsher Dead. Dr. W. G. Bradshef, of - Olive Hill, died at his residence on the 22nd of this month. He had been in bad health for two or three years, and for several months ,had continued to grow, worse until the end came. He was 64 years of age, and had been a practicing dentist for many years. . . v ' - , Dr. Bradsher attended lectures at the Baltimore Dental College, of Baltimore, Md., after which ' he re turned home, and practiced his pro fession in Person, Caswell and Or ange counties. U We think, for a number of yeais, he was the only dentist in these counties. - , He leaves a wife, and three chil dren Dr. J-: C. Bradsher, of Berra, our townsman. WmV .T., and Miss Eugenia, to mpurn his death. In the hour of their bereavement they have the sympathy of a large circle of friends and relatives. Roxboro Institute will begin its session next Monday under the,. man agement of Prof. Geo.B.s Pegram Until Christinas it will be the pub lic school for the - Roxboro'district, so there will be no tuition charges to the children" of the. town that, takes the public . school course. Those taking more advanced studies - will pay-accoidingly. ' - ; - As one assistant 'Prof. Pegram will have -his sister, Missr Annie M. Pegram, wBq is an A. B. graduate of Trinity College, and well prepared for the work. The other assistant, Mrs. H. Fields, will have charge . of the primary d epartment. Mrs. Fields is well known among us and parents should have no anxiety in entrusting their children to the care and in struction of this excellent lady and experienced teacher. Miss. Fannie Sergeant who has taught heretofore so acceptably, will continue to teach music for the Institute. Prof. Pegram" is much pleased with our people and the prospects of his school, and hopes to haye the good school that Roxboro should support. He requests that the" pa trons send their children on the first day and have them bring the books they have been using heretofore. I A Clever Trick. Sunday School Conference The Sunday School Conference for Roxboro circuit M. E Church South will commence at Leas Chapel on Saturday September 24th 1898 it being Saturday before the 4th Sun day in September. O ne or more speakers will be pres ent and every effort will be made to make the dav an enjoyable and help ful one, All the Sunday Schools on the circuit are earnestly invitely to take part.
