et el Lawton's Lake expedition has
been ordered to Manila and ,is now
returning.
All the territory taken by hini is
to be evacuated and the captured
launches will be returned to their
former owners from whom the Fili
pinos took them.
SAYS 100,000 MEN ABE NEEDED.
General Lawton authorized the
statement at Paete this morning that
in the present prospect 100,000
troops will be neceesary to pacify the
islands.
The difficulties are those of fight
ing large bands guerrillas in a trop
ical country. With his brigade he'
could force his way from end to end
of the islands, if he had not to hold
the ground traverse J, for leaving
garrisons behind soon ate up his
forces.
He regretted having to evacuate
the territory had taken.
BIG FILIPINO ARMY NEAft MANILA,
Manila, April 16. During the
absense of Major General Law ton's
expedition to the Santa Cruz d?sti;ct
oh the southeastern side-of Laguna
de Bay, the insurgents have been
concentrating at the Northern end
of the lake, near Pasig.
The American scouts report that
several thousand are already there.
General Lawton's expedition is
now on its way back.
The telegraph wires to Malolos
are down, but matters are quiet with
Major General Mac Arthur.
TROOPS WANT TO QUIT MANILA.

The desire of the volunteers to re
turn to this country from Manila is
evidenced in a report which shows
that of those who have been offered
opportunity to re-enlist, with the
offer of a bonus in travel pay of over
$500. Only about 7 per cent, will
accept. The volunteers desire to
come home by organizations. Gen
eral Otis has been disapproving all
applications for discharges.

tion in next year's campaign if Ho
