Boers Repulsed With Loss How The Armored Train Was De stroyed Buller Will Have 70, 000 Men Against 40,000 Boers. London, Oct. 14. The Transvaal war now assorbs popular attention, and upon the question all Britons are patriotic. There will be no break in support offered government when Parliament meets Tuesday, unless possibly a handful of Irish members seize the opportunity to proclaim their hatred of British in stitutions. The opposition may crit icise the government for unprepared- ness; and this would be fully justi fied, for it is becoming more evident daily that British forces will not be prepared for a great advance before Christina?. The Army corps fwhich is expected to march in one great column to Pretoria will not embark until October the 20. . Those who make light of the threatened delay assume that Boer aggression in the meantime will be of little consequence and confined to Natal and th vicinity of the wes- tern irontier. ne assumption is stupid. There is no possible doubt, in view of the Boer's ultimatum, that it is their intention tc carry on I the most agressive . campaign ppssjv ble. It is strongly probable that the British acquisition of Delagoa Bay will be officially announced on the assembling of Parliament. Boer authorities expect this. No hint of cne terms nas transpirea, out it is believed that the Portnguese author ities will endeavor to' quiet strong popular predjudice in the country against the deal by taking: an atti. tude of yielding to superior force It is safe to say that the price of German acquiescence is a substantial one. If Delagoa Bay becomes British property, then, according; to some opinion, the chief British force would land there and march by the shortest route to Pretoria. The correspondent who sailed with General Buller today to accompany him throughout the campaign, is inclined to tne opinion that the force will march straight north to the nearest railroad base on the southern boundary of the Orange Free Scute, to Bloemfontein and then to Johannesburg and Pretoria. Gee. Buller is quoted as saying that he expects to reach the latter city about the middle of February. It was generally assumed by mili tary men, until the past few days, that two forces of about equal strength woul 1 invade the Transvaal from Natal and Kimberley, converg ing toward Pretoria and Johannes burg. If Buller lands at Cape Town the plan will be a single great invas-. ion from the south through Orange Free State to Pretoria. If he goes to, Durban it will indicate two converg ing colrmns from Natal to Kimber ley, while if he goes to Delagoa Bay then it . will be clear that the British will try to make , the shortest land march to the Boer capital. Estimates of the length of the war even by mili tary jmen w ho know South Africa an-1 the Boer' character vary widely. Some profess to believe the fighting will be orer "by Christ inas. Others say June, but a major ity fix February for the cessation cf hostilities.' . - v ? - v Beulah Union Meeting. I Programm of the Beulah Union Meeting.:.
