For More than six hours the Fire Raged and Was Out of Control. The Fire occured Last TEursday Evening Assistance Rendered by i Railroads, Telegraph and Telephone Compa nies. Shepherd and Neblin, and occupied by George A. Lea Tobacco company; cottage owned by Gillilandand Mosely(un occupied; large livery stables owned by Thomas F. We get the fallowing ac count of the-fire from the Durham Herald of Saturday morning. The heaviest lesers was R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Gompanv, who lost about $130,000. This loss was fairly well covered by insurance. The fire originated in the Reynolds plant, starting in one of the drying machine. It spread rapidly and at one time it looked as if most of the town would go as a sacrifice to the fiery element. The fire started at 3 o'clock in the afternoon and within an hourit was seen that the town was in danger.- Help was first ask of Dan ville,"wh6 had a steamer at work withirr two and one half hours. Then help was asked of Lynchburg but the help could not be sent, this resulting in the call sentto'Durham 'The fire was under control at 9;30 ! . o'clock in the euening, ' this being after it had been burning for six and one half hours. When my friends thought! was unoccupied up stairs, but down stairs , by Johnson & Lloyd, drv goods and- notions, and Terry Grocery company; the Flag warehouse- and stables, and front room occupied by Singer Sewing Ma chine .company; small store occu pied by . " Henry Wyatt; next the Flag warehoure :where, from" old Boston hctel to this point the prop erty was owned, by Shepherd & Edmondson. , . '.. Next was a small store and bar ber shop. These are a part of Star warehouse; Star warehouse and stables, owned by ; Shepherd, Nob- lin & Willingham large brick build ing owned by Mrs. W. T. Reeves, oecupied upstairs by Vaughan, un dertaker, and downstairs by grocery firm of J. W. Elliott; large brick building adjoining and belonging io same party, occupied by J. L. Neal dry goods, and large brick building frame storage building owned bv Ed Blackwell, and occupied by B, Johnson for storage of tobacco; two frame storage houses, one owd by Shepherd the other by Joseph Stebins,' and occupied by Terry Grocery company and Ed Blackwsll. Most of these buildings were located on Factory street. Other buildings burned are Guill's old stables, two small cabins, priz ery owned and occupied by J. W. Easley and the following cottages, owned by J. W. Easley; Mrs. W. I owned and occupied by R. A. Pat- T. Carter, -Banks Adaris, Sampson, Happy Patty" saloon. Morton, colored, and four by Mrs. j v ""T Mary Jeffress. . j Run-dOWIl People Un Main street were destroyed the old Howard house owned and oecupied by the firm of Stebbins Lawson & Spraggins company; These are on the westssde of Main street, going North; the Easley Grocery company wholesale gro cers, two stores; Easley warehouse and stables; all of these are brick, buildings; large frame building owned by Andrews & Patterson occupied by Virginia Bottling Co., in the basement' and above by Mrs. Joe. William's restaurant frame building occupied by C. A. Nes bitt, tinner; store occupied by Arch Atkins: small store occupied by George Roe colored; Patterson saloon; Morris barbar shop; large brick building owned by Ed Turner about to take leave of this world on account of indigestion, nervousness ; and general debility v writes A.
