Bitered at the Post Office at Roxboro, N. jC as second-class mail matter. Roxboro. N. GM Oct. 2nd 1907 OUR OLTPN TARIFF. New York Times. It is not curious that the present President of the United S ates, with .his great and exaggerated pre fu sions of interest in all eth a! i s tions, his inveterate tendancy to reeard all questions as erhicfJ, even even those of taste, should deliber ately and persistently ignore and deny the moral bearings of tarifl taxation for the benefit of the few at the expense of the many? And the queerness of such calculated obliquity is the more noteworthy becauae of the fact that at one time Mr. Roosevelt saw and, seeing, naturally preached the injustice and unfairness of the very puroose xf protecting and o i s pratical ef fects But as pointed out-so clear f by Governor Folk, the econom c vicej of the protective tariff is not . 5 nspicucus than its violatione of equity. Here we are, a nation with immense resources which we are developing with steady deter mination and energy, with the an nounced purpose of taking a great part, if possible a dominant part, in the commerce of the world. And we keep in operation a system of obstruction and restriction of com merce of the most rigid, complex, veratious, and costly character. If it were not for our extraordi nary natural advantages, the im mense, range and variety of the products of our soil and our mines, and theunfail'ng stream of immi gration from our earliest days as a nation, we never could have stood our own efforts to impede trade, Sooner or later the reversal of this absurd policy, the emancipation of fur commerce, is bound to be a dominent issue in our politics, and it may be sooner rather than later.
