Dl .ccicrs -'Empower llie President to - ' Advertise For Bids For Construction h ;rkRoad WfflfProfcably be Op ; ' eratcd Under Its Present Name. j Winston-Salem, Further de t tails of the.Winston-Salem South Jbcund Railroad were forthcoming , this afternoon, following a meet . nig of the directors of the road. The road will be constructed with funds provided by the Atlantic ' Coast Line and the Norfolk & 'Western, but it will probably be k' operated under its present name and Mr. Henry E. Fries will re main president of the corpora ticn, The directors, including Capt. F. C. Robbins and Mr. George W. Montcastle, of Lexington; S. ' A. Hearne, of Albermarle, and ;;G. W. Hundley, of Wadesboro, empowered President Fries to ad vertise for bids for construction : work to be filed next month. The ; contracts will be awarded and the work commenced early in the fall and it is expected that the line ; -will be in operation within eigh teen months thereafter. Chief Engineer Clenchill, of the . Norfolk & Western, was at the meeting. Chief Engineer 0. H. P. Cornell, of the Southbound, "has- done fine work and will be ; retained to have supervision of the construction work. He will .retain his offices in this city. OUR CHARGED CONDITIONS. r EFFECTS Of GOOD ROADS. The Ridgeway correspondent of . the? Henry County (Va.) Bulletin ( writes that paper as follows con- j (cerning the macadam road our county is building from Settle's bridge to Reidsville: While traveling in Rockingham , Tjounty, N, C, last week your cor respondent saw a splendid object lesson Ain road, building. The county of Rockingham is building ivith her county convicts a graded and macadamized road from Set ales bridge to Reidsville, about half ,T)f which is comoleted. The effect "upon the abutting farms is marvel ous. Farmers living close to the . road are invariably improving the appearance of their homes and grounds by painting, repairing and building new houses. Many homes "were a considerable distance from . - the road Have abandoned their old fashioned homes and built neat new ones close to "the public. And the - entire length of the road presents a prosperous, progressive fc appearance. The road passes , through Wentworth, the county ' seat, at which place a new building 3iad not been built tor twenty years sprorto the commencement of this ' Voad, since when a handsome three : story briCK and tile court house, "sand several handsome residences liave been built A new school ' ."house and several more residences are now in the course of construe , i j ition. we are imormea tnat tne rn- creased valuation of property and . - consequent increase in taxes will ; be such that the building of this V road will 'not cost the county one J cent above the cost of, keeping the . n convicts. Review. Old Fashion Economy of College Boy Needed Today. Charity an3 Children ; -; 4' Formerly we heard:f;men boast that they Jarided at i college with'$2 in their pockets and worked v their way through with only a small debt and the rare one with no debt at all. All this sounds strange to those who are familiar with' present-day college life. We have heard of . boys who cooked for themselves, cut wood, or hair, shined shoes,' old clothing performed any and all kinds of work and made every edge cut, whether sharp or dull, to save a sixpence. This fine self-denial and re sourceful energy is not so common as it used to be. We are more ex-i travagant in every sense of the word than we were 25 years ago, but nowhere is it more plainly seen than among the college boys. Why even the young preachers, in some cases, are getting some what above, themselves and spend the money that is given to them like lords of the land. We heard not long since of one young fellow who sent a bill for cut flowers to the church that was helping him along. But this spirit of money is not at all peculiar to the preachers. It is the rule rather than exception among them all. The boys wean fine clothes now, we are told, every day in the week and Sunday, too; Tennis outfits have become a re quisite to social position. Baseball toggery must be had at any cost. Instead of saving at every point the rule now seems to be spending at every point. As a consequence, education has come to be a most expensive lux ury. A father with a half dozen children to educate must be third cousin to Rockefeller in order to meet his bills. $500 a session in stead of $225 is not considered startling. We will have to get back into the old way or somebody is going to be hurt; and those worst hurt will be the boys who cultivate these habits of extravagance. The fellow who must dig'for his educadon is about heri the' white men' first came in numbers to this tpart of 7, the. State. There is a town not farfrom Charlotte that has a repu. tation for loafers. It also has a reputation as a poor town for busi- ness. u is town .wnere tne visi tor is stared at and discussed by lazv gangs that hang about street corners, when they cannot find chairs or benches to accommodate their flesh that is' a weariness to themselves and to all- industrious people. The store loafer as v well as the street corner loafer has been banished from Charlotte for years. The loafer can find no place in a city where business hustle is the order of the day. There arel few loafers in Salisbury, none in High Point and a very few in Asheville or Greensboro. The loafer is an abominrtion.' There is no excuse for his existence and the town that" insists on cultivating him ought at least ta keep him m biding. If G. . B Hick s, ': Adm . - of sosan A . . T. D, Slaughter and others.
