Cannon has sustained a mighty I fall and his downward career has been materiall acceler ated by his fellow Republicans. He is a typical Republican and one o' the strongest, most energetic men the party has ever had in leadership and one of its most un relenting fighters for the yery worst policies for which the Re publican party stands. The party has tried to make a scapegoat of "Uncle Joe" since he was cast down from his mighty position of leadership and since later on it was found that it would be popu lar to throw stones at the fallen leader. Vanderbilts Own Auto Road. An auto roadway, all but t wo miles of it within the bounds of his 140,000-acre estate, has been built by George W. Vanderbilt covering 22 miles, from Bilt more House to his hunting lodge at the summit of Mount Pigah. 5,757 feet high. With the build ing of a two or three mile cut of all the road will be on his do main. The track rises almost a000feet in 22 miles 2,000 of it being gained in trie last six miles without any grade exceeding 7 per cent. This called for , blasting tre mendous rock cliffs and swing ing sharp turns on the edge of sheer precipices, and now $20, 000 more must be spent widen ing these turns. A trial of Mr. Vanderbilt 's new 60-horsepower car showed that its great length causes it to swing perilously over descents of hundreds of feet. The road is td be carried 20 miles farther to curve back to Biltmore House. - Loss Time means Loss of Pay. In other words the people of the country see through the Republican party's attempt to make Cannon the parry scapegoat. The Richmond Times Dispatch is vigorous in its denun ciation -of his party's treatment of Cannon, and says: "It is said that the Hon. Joseph G. Cannon will retire from public life, upon the completion of his present term in Congress; if, when the tim e arrives he shall think it a desirable thing to do: if an attempt shall not be made to drive him out if his constituents are willing to give him up. Nobody knows ex actly what-he will do about it: but the politicians out in the Danville District are already casting lots for his garments. It is known that he feels bitterly his treatment by his party and now the Washington correspondent of the Chicago Tri bune says, ''nobody pays any at tention to Uncle Joe. The Czar is dethroned. The good old days are gone and he is beginning to feel he ought to go with them.n "We thing so too, but before he goes somebody ought to say that he has been most outrageonsly treated; that h!s party, whose bid ding he always did in scorn of consequences, made him the scape goat for its sins and drove him into the wilderness. The ablest and most typical Kepublican of his time he has been neglected, vilified and spit upon by the party which he served with all the ardor of his vicious nature, and he has stood the ingratitude of his associates like a man. Without the ability the resourcefulnes the rugged streng th of me chief exponent, but with all. his meanness he should have soce acknowledgement from his traducers of his service to his party. "When he retires, Mr. Cannon should go back to the State of his nativity and hhere reflect among honest people- upon the instability of earthly greatness and the utter lack of honor in the Republican party.
