Manager SUBSCRIPTION TERMS One Dollar a Year Fifty Cents For Six "Months. Twenty-five Cents For 3 Months. The Editor is in no way responsible for r;,; views expressed by correspondents. Entered at the Post bffice at Roxboro, N. y. C., as second-class matter. V : Roxboro, N. C, Feb. 25, 1914. Sid WANTED, A LEADER. c - Did you ever sit down and think real seriously of the many ' ' advantages Person county and this section possesses! over many - -others? Well, if you did, you have doubtless realized that most of them come to us through the . , beneficience of the Higher Powers c . and that little can we point. to and say, we did it. Why, large cor porations are making millions, ''r'. yes millions, by exploiting lands ; and selling it at fabulous prices, I. and only claiming that it will pro o duce when well tended in the : neighborhood of two hundred dol- : lars an acre. They advertise with beautiful booklets, with colored plates, that the lands they are selling will produce in such quan : V titles that a man can make a com fortable living off of ten acres. Now, you know of many farmers . m this County who are making , more than two hundred dollars on V, an acre. The entire farm does not produce this, neither will any ; large farm in the section so liber ally advertised do it, but that :V dpes not keep the people from - buying. The section mentioned is filling up with good citizens, p: largely from the north, while we are simply sitting still. What does the census show? a That, while the town has increas ; - ed in population the County has ; hardly made a move, only a few - hundred gained during the past : ; ten years. And , why ? Simply ;v because we ase asleep, fast asleep, ,;! and will not let the outside world :; tnow about us. There are many y things we ought to have, and could have, for Person County is ;. no pauper. The Couety owes al- most nothing, a small bonded in j -deptedness, less than ten thousand ; V we believe, and yet, we are doing ; '-nothing in the way of progress! glVVe will modify that statement a : , little, for we are doing something Sprat mighty little. We have asix ' months school term, but we have r that through the kindness of a y-good citizen, so we can take no f credit for that. We are spending seven or eight thousand dollars a year on our roads, but the man who goes through the County would hardly believe it. ; ' What do we need ? TheJ'aiTn gyers Union is very stromr in thk ; County, represented by many of the very best men in the County, and any movement which they jgot behind would receive the con sideration, if not favorable action, yfrom the powers which be. But t0 -do not seem to be able to .'.concentrate on a leader, a man , yho is able and willing to enter ; into the necessary fight to receive such things as they should demand. ; -'A leader who is willing to forget 'self and work to the best interest of, the greatest number. If a road is; to be built, or a school to be .established, lay aside all personal y feelings and work for -the estab- lismentof said road or school ?tre tne. greatest majority would insure comf oVtable "Erafel fifing the' term of the ;$chool, ; ' krid'vfhere the" neighborhood would be willing to open their doors to thet boys and. girls and receive them as boarders. You pay your taxes and from these taxes comes the ; sup port pf the .colleges, Chapel Hill,' M., State Normal and the Eastern Carolina Training School . These are all good and? we would not do anything to cripple them," bur how many of you have' ever receivedany benefit from ai single dollar 'which you have been taxed for their support? How many of you have much idea that you ev er will receive any benefit from them? Again .this County is amply able tcjhave a farm demonstration agent,, k man who knows how to do intelligently advanced farming and who would spend all of his time' laooring to show our people how to adopt these methods to their farming. Other counties have these demonstrators and without exception are wonderful ly pleased with them, and where ever tried they have . shown con clusively the wisdom of such a man. No difference how good a farmer you may be, there are many things for you to learn, and most of our farmers would be glad to learn. While there are many things needed, these last twTo are badly needed and if the Farmers Union would get 'behind fhem, with a leader intensely interested, our word for it, you would receive a respectful hearing, and ere long you would win in the fight. But, we need a LEADER. HAY :Just received a , larige supply : of ; Michigan Hay. Give us you next order. How Mucli ; Would You take For Your Eyes? The' ;l)iggest fortune- :in u the .worldi Wouldn't buy- them, -wbuld it? Yet many ' people -tibc '''their eyes in such a way that 'they ; are destroying them fQi nothing. It affords us much pleasure to have these letters and we are sure our readers will enjoy them. Rev. Boone has just recently come iuto our midst and it has been our pleasure to meet with him frequently. We have found him thoroughly alive to the best interests of the County, in tensely interested in educational affairs and things pertainiag to good roads. Watch for these ar ticles and road them. We sincere ly wish more of our ministers, lawyers, doctors, business men and well informod farmers would write letters to The Courier. While we make no pretence to running a paper for glory, still, our one aim is to publish a NEWSPAPER and be of. some service to the people whom we serve. Let us hear from you, we do not care what your subject, 01 whether we agree with you or not, just make it interesting and fight shy of personalities and we will gladly give it room.
