VALUE OF LIME.
Raleigh, N. C., June 29. ? An in
teresting demonstration on the value
of lime ha* just been completed by
George Evans in Davie County. In
the fall of 1923 Mr. I. G. Roberts of
Cana undertook this demonstration
with Mr. Evans and althoogM~jthe
land was Very thin and poor thy re
fulta show conclusively the value of
lime applications.
IThe field of red clay sail was di
vided into four sections and ground
limestone applied to three sections
*? at the rate of 1,000 2,000 and 3,000
pounds per acre. The remaining sec
tion was left unlimed as n check on
the other plots. Then the whole
field was sown to wheat using 200
pounds of 8-3-3 fertilizer to the acre.
In the spring a mixture of rel and
alaike clover wrfS sown upon the
wheat- and 200 pounds per acre of
16 per cent acid phosphate \
ured all over the field and the lime
'showed that it was going to' be of
great benefit to the crop. The clover
matured and was cut for hay, each
section being weighed separately,
with the following results:
No lime 492 pounds
1,000 lbs. lime 1,032 pounds
2,000 lbs, lime 1,844 pounds
3,000 lbs. lime 1,308 pounds
This land - was of about average
acidity and St much less than aver
age fertility but the value of lime
stands out as clearly as though the]
?oil had been very rich. From this
demonstration and from oth'irs car
ried on ever the - State, $. C. Blair,
extension agronomist at State Col
lege, recommends the use of 2,000
bounds of lime to the acre as thi=
- <?hv>unt does as well if not bettor
than "larger . applications,

Many Roxboro Folks Are Showing
Hqw to Avoid Needle** Suffering
There*! - nothing more annoying
than kidney weakness or inability to
properly ? control the^ kidney secre
tions. Night and day alike, the suf
ferer is tormented and what with
the burning and scalding, the atten
dant backache, headache .and diz
ziness, life is*mdeed a burden. Doan's
Pills ? a stimulant diuretic to the
kidneys ? have brought peace and
comfort to many Roxboro people.
Profit by this Roxboro resident's ex
perience:
E. M. Green, says: "When I turn
ed in bed, my back hurt so badly 1
hardly got any rest. Mornings my
back was sore and stiff and sharp
twinges ^shot through my kidneys. I
had spells of ' dizzipess, when I
atooped and snots flashed before my
eyes. My kidneys acted too freely.
I purchased Doan's Pills at the Davis
Drug Co. Doan's soon got to. the
seat of the trouble and I felt like
a different person."

CLAIMS CANCER CAN
NOW BE PREVENTED
"Cancer is a great human menace.
It is increasing by leaps and bounds.
If anything, it is increasing more
rapidly in the United States than it
is in the British Isles. Of those
now living in the British Isles, 5,00
0.000 are doomed to die of cancer if
they do uothing_ to prevent it. In
the United States the doomed num
ber is 10,000,000 and ijjight easily
rise to 15,000,000 or 20,000,000."'
This remarkable statement it
made by Sir W. Arbuthnot Lane
Bart., one of the world's most emin
ent surgeons and dietitians, in an
article appearing in the J*une 20
issue of . the Dearborn Independent
According to Sir Arbuthnot, can
cer is not caused by the baccillus
that scientists have so long sought
and .not yet found, but rather by
poisons created in the body by the
food that is eaten. It is a filth
disoase, and its prevention is ac
complished by keeping th? digestive
tract thoroughly drained on its ac
cumulations.
Continuing the Doctor says:
"What we should do then, if we
would avoid cancer, is to eat whole
wheat bread and raw fruits,. and
vegetables, shunning all meat, first
that we may be /better nourished,
second that we may mora easily
eliminate waste- product* and thus
adequately drain the house in which
oar cells live. Who ever foregoes
white bread will perform o <rreat
service for himself. It is deadly. '
It is a difficult task to change the
, food habits of a nation or to induce
the people to take sufficient exer
cise each day. Sir Arbuthnot says,
however,, that "whoever will correct
his diet to a reasonable extent, take
reasonable exercise and keen his di
ges'ive tract absolutely clean, need
have no fear of cancer."
