Cummins, Iowa's most out standing" political leader for more than a score of years, died at his fc-rr.e here late today. Death was j due to heart disease and followed j several years of ill-health, which, i 'he wever, had not interfered greatly with his activities in Washington. Senator Cummins was stricken fcud-ienly Thursday . morning-, but rallied, and his condition was not considered critical, until this after noon- when he sUifererl a relapse arid the fatal attack, at 4:30 p. m. The death of the senator came only a few weeks after he returned i to Iowa from Washington for his final summer vacation as a senator, and found him anxiously awaiting t!*.e day when he might put aside his official cares and devote his time, entirely to : writing an auto biography. He had greeted bit recent defeate for Republican senatorial nomina tion, his close associates said, and already had started dictation of the introduction to the autobiography, which he expected to occupy his time for more than a year after his re tirement next March, when he would have completed 18 years of service ; in the senate. Senator Cummins' associates de clared tonight' that his Mecent -poli .tical reversals could not. have had any effect upon his health or any bearing upon his illness*. ''Chase the gloom out of here. You feel worse than I d^," were his words to his office force in Wash ington the day following his defeat in' the primary in Iowa, and he con tinued to accept his defeat in the same cheerful- mood. For his bftg service, his political friends of the state joined tonight in acclaiming him Iowa's greatest public figure. Under the statutes, -a successor to Senator Oummins would be appoint ed by Governor John Hammill, who is now 'n a western tour, i No announcement had been made by Senator Cummins' relatives here tonight a^ to funeral j^ans. It was considered IikeJy -that service would n:t be held, until Monday to pejmit the senator's colie, agues to reach D& Moifries fr:> ma' distance*. - Time to secure judges fro the coun ty and community fairs.
