PERSON COUNTY
By Wbl A. GRAHAM
Commissioner of Agriculture
Person county enjoys many distinct
advantages in the realm of agricul
ture. With the other counties in
Piedmont North Carolina, it is prac
ticing diversification to a lair degree.
It is in the heart of the oldest to
bacco-producing belt and rightly lays
claim to . some of the highest quaiity
of tobacco produced in North Carolina.'
The total value of Person county's
larm products rims around $4,750,000
annually. This is nearly a million
dollars in excess of the total value
of all crops in the State Of Rhode
Island and over half flie value ol the
total crops of Nevacfcf
The. soils of. Person county are va
ried. but red clay; formation predom
inates. Drainage. due to the rolling
land, is good, and rainfall is sufficient
to Insure successful. methods
Corn leads in the acreage of crops,
with about .25.000 acres, on which the
crain alone is worth about hall a
mUliop dollars a year. The county's
twenty thousand acres planted to to
. bacco yielded $3,750,000 last year. The
wheat crop also is of fair importance,
with 11.500 acres., whose monetary

tractors were 74. while commercial
fertilizers showed* about 11.000 tonij
used.
The improved highways. have great
ly- aided the. people .of North Carolina
in becoming acquainted with Person
Coyinty, whereas before it was con
siderably isolated. That it is not
greatly unlike many other progressive
Piedmont counties is quite evident to
those who. travel to. this part of the
State.
The tobacco sales on the Roxboro
market last year amounted to 6.817.
063 pounds, averaging $25.45. This is*
one of the highest average in the
State, by virtue of its high grade leaf
produced largely in the south-,
western area. There Is av peculiar. to
bacco section to be found in the ad
joining portions of Person. Caswell.
Alamance and Orange counties This
r.ccounts for the extra high price tn
the Mebane market. Much of this]
rood tobacCo goes to Danville. Va..
to boost -up thjsir average also.
One s'i*gestion that might be of
fered toward improving this county's
economic? agriculture1" is thit- ot the
forage crops. - A prominent practice
at present. Ms to strip the leaves of
the c,orn .which. somewhat hurts the*
weight and quality of the' corn srain.
