TUESDAY, J ANUARY iH, u)io EDUCATION IN THE CRU CIBLE. The grand paean which ha been sounding in piaic ! Amer ican education since the awaken ing of twenty years ago seems now to be giving place to a dis mal wail over our low scholastic ideals. In some quarters, at least, there is a marked tendency to criticize and condemn rather than to applaud and approve. Some months ago, it may be recalled, a writer in a popular magazine dis cussed at length the degeneration of American educators, ;md gave us to understand that many pro fessors in our leading institution were utterly devoid of l"th moral principles and religion-, instinct-. More recently, a distinguished bishop has issued a solemn warn ing against American univer sities. All are had. he says, and all are heretical. In the current issue of the At lantic Monthly. Hugo Muntcr berg. of Harvard, presents an other phase of the subject and strongly lament- the Ick of ap preciation for scholarship in thi countrv. His reasoning i- inter esting. In an able editorial the gilled Richmond li-patch says : "Every political party since the adoption of thc Constitution has had its origin in some such move ment. Madison's discontent with Hamilton's extreme policy gave JefTerson his first great ally for his Republican party. Clay's re bellion against the Monroe "Era of Good Feeling" made possible the organization of the Whigs. Sumner's refusal to follow the conservative views of the old Whigs gave thc "Black Republi cans" their first foothold in Con gress. "In thc same way 'historical omens would seem to favor an in surgent movement just at this( time. Every such successful ef fort has grown oot of the effort of the majority to enact some especially partisan measure. Hamilton was seeking radical fin ancial legislation when Madison rebelled.
