The Dally Enterprise J. J. IARRI0S. Editor Issued daily except Sunday, and delivered free of charge to city subscribers by carriers furnished by this office SATURDAY, AUGUST 13, 1910 MAYOR GAYNOR. The recent tragedy in which Mayor Gaynur, of New oik, came so near losing his life ha, served to emphasize his per sonality. It lias gone deep into public sentiment and brought forth an estimate of the man which had hee,i formed so strongly in his favor, in so short a time and which was only awaiting an oppor tunity to express itself. The attention of the people was being drawn to him in that mysterious, yet unmistakable manner that follows up a strong character. A man recognized ability, hon est an, sincere, with the courage of his con ictions. he was rap idlv taking hold of the public conscience which never fails to re spond to the right time. So rapidly has lie grown that his most intimate friends were not prepared for the expression of the gen eral interest that was taken in him when there was a kmIi1iIv ot losing him. The universal sympathy was natural and expected, hut the interest in this case meant more than sympathy. I he en tire country breathes easier now that it is assured that his lite will be spared and the interest in him as a public man is not likely to grow less than it is today. Out of the tragedy has come a just esti mate, already formed but which would hae taken a decade to give as universal expressiin as was gicn in a week. EXIT BALLINGER. In the case of Hallinger who has .it last decided to take a back seat no polities should enter into the case from either side. It is a matter 111 which all the people are concerned and while liallinger holds a high position under the administration this should have little to do with making up a verdict Those who followed closely the evidence of Idavis aird others who testitied before the Senate committee .ire s,,iistie, tli.u Hal linger was in some way mixed up with the proposed deal whereby the Government was relimpiisli valuable interests to private parties. Mr. Glavis. who was an infcii.'i officer saw this and in hi- lagerness to protect the interests of th,- people inclined ihr ill will of Hallinger on two counts (, lav 1-' actions w as taken a 111 subordination and such action also brought his superior officer into disrepute s he stated on the yand his action .i rather an un usual one but alter he saw how persistent Hallinger was m the matter, he was determined to make it public. I he Senate com mittee was composed in its mar'tin of the ablest law vers of that bodv. some of whom practically made as good counsel for Hal linge, as his paid attorney. Hut in the face of all of the protec tion thrown around Hallinger during the long investigation, the evidence showed that he was unlit for public office. His resigna tion which is looked for any day will meet with the sanction of all classes of people and no doubt the administration will feel re lieved when he is 1 nit. o When a man is lacking in most of the essentials that go to make up a well rounded man. when he 1- living to palm off oM the public something that has not been :he result ,.f well e, pupped eHort. it is t!u. easiest thing in the woihl turn his head I he saying that a little knowledge is a daiigci u- tiling, grip- Ml, t, preleinlei at everv turn, and hold- him up to public ridicule disgust, whether he realize- i: or ,, . jv m, vpi 1 -nig to -.,,,1, how -uch characters et recognition, but a ol, server can -ee that it comes from that class ,.f pr. pie wii.. ale lheniseb e alicctcd with the same weaknes- and can look 11.. higher :hau their vision will take them I hev aie not able to diaw anv dis Unction under the different appellation- and titles that belong to nun ;t"d the consequence 1- that all men fk alike .! them I In is the one weak sp,,t ni the rapid development .. the human race and it not only makes a bigger to,.
