Thr Daily Enterprise J. J. FarriM . . Editor Isaued dU ascapt Sunday, and de ' lirerad trmm of eharg; to city subscrib ers by earriara lurnukad by this offica. MONDAY, AUGUST 19, 1912 THE SPIRIT OF THE TURK The fight over the senatorship by some of our newspaper friends as well as the "hired orators" shows plainly that genius may have its limitations, but stupidity has none. The political war clouds are menacing with campaign repression at Washington and political crises at home this i the order of present day things with the unplacaule hatred the Turks' very much in evidence WORSE AND MORE OF IT It is a sad condition of alTair in New York but there is still' hope that by investigation, pub- icity and exposure, and by a se vere and summary punishment of the guilty, that the practice of Kraft may he destroyed, at least for a season. Public sentiment in that city does not seem to hi strong enough to engage in conflict with criminal accumula tion. I'.ven one 01 the detectives employed by Hums was discov ered to have sold out for Si.ooo, and there is no telling how many more employed !v the detective agencies and District Attorney Whitman are preparing to double-cross their employers.. New 1 1 , 1 orK nas heen o intent upon money-making that the entire city seems to he permeated with the ..i-i .1 .i.i , imno.so nv mat tne oniv sm i poverty, and the only tolly is to refuse to make -money by any method, however culpable. Graft is a plant of modest be ginning and slow growth. In cities it usually begins with a cigar or a drink of whisky or a free lunch given to the policeman on the beat who will look after the interests of a saloon, prevent brawls and hush up disturbances. When the good people et to gether and enact laws restricting the operation of saloons and oth er places, and when it becomes profitable to violate these laws, the position of the policeman in creases in imp' .tance, and his in fluence is wo-ih all the more. It is the --me with gambling houses and other illegal establish ments. Wl :;mi these places are permitted to run in violation ut law, those who-e duty it is to en force the law mu-t be paid hand somely for their complaisance in keeping their eyes tfosed. As the business grows it becomes sys tematized, and carried on with the same diligence as any other busi ness. ' If you trust a friend trust him to the last -it is better to be hum iliated by a betrayal than be in capable of a perfect faith. After a'l the object of a man's forgive ness may be unworthy, but that cannot mar the linness of your pardon. It is not so much a fight be tween Kitchin, Simmons and Clark as it is for tlie perpetuation of that policy of the Democratic party which uj to this time has been in the majority and made the platforms. For fifteen years there have been two factions in the party and. as we understand it, that element which heretofore has had comparatively little fol lowing has selected the "flower of Democracy" for their leader and hope to -win on his past record. To be candid about the matter the plan of battle is better laid than ever before and with the lights out in the tower and some of the old time sentinels asleep or deaf and dumb, the result cannot be fore seen. We do not believe that North Carolina is ready for a change of sentiment if the voters once understand the true situation. PICKETT MILLS, HIGH POINT, N. C. (Continued from pace 1.) and manholes. The main mill. 305 feet 5 inches long x 104 feet 4 inches wide, is constructed of brick pilasters, reinforced concrete panels, and timber columns, beams and girders, as stated here, tofore.
