We hae leou ivked 1 sfsera! wbj" we did not take ;h ski m on one or t be other of these propo-sinon. Oar answer is simple and pla:n. It is not the mi;on ot t he .1 1 t'KN" a I to advocate the claims or to work for the advancement ot any faction. Oar aim is ratbej- to nr.ite factious as far aa possible, knowing that the existence of such is detrimental to the growth of any town. We dire tobaild up, but we 'e uoth ing to be gaiDed by pulling down one man to build up another. The people of New Berne have liberally patron ued our enterprise ; we de sire to repay them by putting in a word for New Iierue whenever it can be done, and extending the circulation of oar paper. We can not do either of those by becoming an organ of any faction or party. While tiie present board of com miss ion ers may not be alxive criti cism, jet in making a change there is danger of rroiog worse. They are familiar with their duties, have their plans for completing the court house, and tbe credit of the county is good, tbe bonds btfi ng now nearly at par. Tbe most objectionable feature of tbe board is a want of harmoay amoug themselves. But If tbe Justices of the county are what they should be they need no advice from us. They are suffi ciently familiar with the affairs of tbe county to know what men to elect. -riCHTlXU WKEUS. We meet frequently with iln beading to puru graphs in ex changes. If weeds are allowed to get a foot iu height, a warfare is then beguu aoM carried on to an indefinite leagth of time, ui.d tbe weeds often come off victorious. Tbe usual eaase of tbia failure is in attempt iajf to eoltivuta too much land with a small force. The result is an eaormoos growth of weeds, a chok ing and diminution of tha crop, and a an p ply of poxioas seeds to fill the soil aad last for years. The plough and the harrow will prepare a clean mellow bed of esr.th before planting. If the field Is inverted sod, it may l red need to a state of fine pnlveriza- tloo with a disc harrow. Uy planting the seed au inch and a half or two inches deep, in tbe sb allow furrow made by the marker, a floe slant-tooth barrow may bj passd over both before and after the plants are np without in jory to them. The operatiou may be contmned once a week until the corn is i foot high. Some of the plants may be bent over, but they ill be ernct agaiu iu a day or two. Alter this, a shallow cultivator may be ran between the rows till the corn is as high as the horse's back, This work, properly performed, will leave tbe field as clean as the floor the small slant teeth killmg the sprouting seed in the row and among the plants as well as over the whole surface; and the subse- qaeot cultivating keepmg the space e'ean between the rows. The flurry in Wall street, which at one time threatened the brp iness inteiests of the entire country, has apparently uroved to be onlv a stock panic, confined almost wholly to tliose who have been Ix-ttinpon iriees. With this danger averted, we are better able to gain some idea as to the present prospects lor future hii-i'.ies-: though, of course, something may arise to ci:i-e an unexpected change. For several years business lias been settling dou ii to I: it seems to be a sound ia-i -. ( )ver pi oduet imi in manu factures has almost, ii not entirely, ceased, and the stocks of manufac tured goods from pig iron to calico are not so large but that an in creased demand would soon show t nit stocks are not e.essive. and an advance in prices would abno-r --iirely follow. Consumers of d: Is. as well as of jug iron and all o'li.-r articles, have purchased only to meet their immediate lcquiie men ts. and in in anv cases wear and tear has been going un.- -in r. ih a. :o rollirig stock, lor instance, with out being counterbalanced b new put cha.s, i s. The i ntisiimpt ive wati's of the country ale. I heiefoic. huge, and under favorable condi tions these wants will be supplied. With business of all kinds good, we would soon see our factories crowded with work to meet the de mand- upon them. The conditions ate theicfore favorable Fa- an im provement in trade, provided the agricultural interests, upon which so much depends, are prosperous. Looking to the South we lind that the people of that section an- turn ing their attention mote ami more to the production of food-tail's. The acreage in wheat in de South ern States this ear is 7o0.000 acres more than last year, and the indications poinr to a most excel lent crop soon to be harvested. We think it probable that the Southern States will produce more wheat this year than ever before. The oif crop promises a fair yield, while units will be abundant: eaily vege tables will add many hundreds of thousands of dollars t his year to '.he wealth of the South. The area in corn will, we think, be larger than last year, and in cotton there will hardly be any decrease in acreaga-. In other sections the crop outloak is equally promising, and. with favorable weather from now till harvest time, we will probably gather the largest wheat crop ever produced iu this country. Should these indications be fulfilled, busi ness would necessaiily receive a decided impetus, and the fall of ISvl would almost surely witness a maiked improvement all along the line. Baltimore Kcco rd . Drudgrc First! tve contiuuallv -We h abroad for to go an skilled labor,' said intelligent gentleman to the Senate Committee on Labor. "How do you account for that fact?" asked the chairman. "It is due to the general antipathy of young nieu to learning a trade," answered the gentleman. The observation of those who mingle wiih onug men confirms I he statement. "I don't care to go into that business, there is too much hard work in it!" is again aud again heard from boys whose only capital for years must be their honesty, in telligence and industry. Show me w hat you can do. and I will show you what yon are." said Foul Derby to the Glasgow stu dents. That is a more stimulating thought for a boy to cany with him than the enervating one: "Give me a soft place and I will show you wha,' I can do !" Those who trudge and drudge to day h.ill ride tomorrow. An American importer lccciilly asked ;i German woollen maiiuhic tnrcr how it was that he could pay the height and the high duty on his goods and yet compete with Ameri can manufacturers.
