He is looking fresh and vigorous and is pre paring his docket for the fall courts with his usual zeal and earn estnwss. It gives ug pleasure to note the success of anv of our young men. but we deem a special notice in this instance not amiss. Mr. Simmons has gradually risen in his profes sion until he now stands in the very front rank in Eastern North Carolina; and the large practice which he and his partner. He came forward and entertained the con vention with words of encouragement, and congratulated the delegates on the striking contrast in the order they pre served and that of the body which as sembled there on the Saturday before. Mr. Rouse is a good speaker, and we believe there is a conservative element in his ideas about public affairs which will enable him to do effectual work in the campaign. The committee on resolutions re turned and reported through their chairman, J. Q. Jackson. Mr. Bryan is a native of Duplin county, now a student at the Louisville Theological Seminary. His discourse Sunday night was one of the most interesting we have heard for many days. The poem "Amid the Slain,"' written by Miss Lidia Whitfield and published in the Journal a short time ago, is quite interesting. Miss Whitfield has conssderable talent, and has written several pieces that have been published in different papers in our State. She is a Lenoir lady, and lives but a short dis tance from our town. We wish her success in her new field. The two parties now have a full ticket in the field in our county, with an inde pendent or so to make the thing lively. James Carter, an independent Republi can from he-re will go before the Repub I licans claiming to be the regular nomi 1 nee, and before the people as "anti '. 6tock law." We hear that Mr. Cox, the ! other "regular nominee." was a strong stock law man in the beginning-, but in this State. A colored man at Enfield Daniel Boone, at Charlotte, and Wil liam Ferris, at Poplar Tent Fair, have all fallen victims to it recently, but up to the last accounts only the first men tioned case had proved fatal. Better hit lower, gentlemen. The Grant & Ward smash-up still continues to be interesting at the North Mr. Wm. H. Bingham has discovered that he is the loser of some 47,544.47, and also eucn evidence as induces him to pronounce a statement which Ward made to him a deliberate lie," and awakened Mr. Jas. D.' Fish to the ex tent, tnat he says he is not quite certain, but believes Ward is a scoun drel. ineiiew xorK limes says: it seems to be pretty clearly established ; that Gen. Butler had a conference with Secretary Chandler at Portsmouth on the 20th of July. Chandler then went to Bar Harbor, and in company with Eu- genriaie. George JVl. Kobeson and acon fidential representative of Steve Elkins had a consultation with Blaine. Then Chandler, in company with Robeson and Hale, again met Butler at Portsmouth. This was on the 4th of August, and two days latter appeared Butler's brief let ter announcing his purpose to stand by the nominations of the Greenbackers and the anti-Monopolists. There can-be no doubt that the old intriguer had a full understanding with the Blaine leaders, and through them with Blaine himself. ICS the Democratic can sume. leave such matter interested .
