Not withstand ing the suggestions of ! the Journal that the young men of the ! city should take hold anil give the citi zens an opportunity of assembling and hearing the Lieelarations of Independ ence read, no such enjoyment wa of fered , There was a match game of baseball played in the afternoon between the clubs known as the first and wcniid nine, in which the order of numbers was reversed and the second turned out to be first and the first the second in the matter of playing. To be very plain the secood nine won the game. The revenue cutter .Sfeivt observed the day with a fine display of bunting, a sunrise gun. a National salute at noon and a sunset gun. The shipping in the harbor alo decorated with the National and other flags. But the colored people were hero in force: they came by rail, by steamer, and no doubt many by other routes. The street at some point were literally packed, and various entertainments, such as cake walk grand marches, had a lively attendance and a good time. There wa not the usual popping of crackers, whizzing of wheels and shoot ing of rockets that generally prevails at this time. The reason is supposed to be in the grand display of enthusiasm in November last from which the boys have not recovered . but yet there was enough of this kind of amusement to satisfy all nervous people. All in all, as a holiday it was well observed and many of our citizen nought amusement out of town, even as far away as (!oldstoro. where a rare treat was offered. The boy puts a harness on the dog t i hs the t race around h is nun w a p.t . or holds it in his hands, and f . I ! . , a -his lather out into the fog. U" course, the older Eskimo h i some idea of where the 1 1 i n. l.-.i will be grazing or li sting, ami n, soon finds out which way ihe win, I is blowing over the place t el v he suspects the reindeer to be. Th. n. with his boy and the dog, h.- goe- nrouiui in such a way thai tin game will not be disturbed, to some place where the wind blowing oyer Ihe reindeer will come toward the hunt ers. As soon a.s t his place is reached, the dog smells the reindeer, ami commences snifling the air as if anxious logo toward them. The boy allows the dog to advance slow ly, still holding on to the harness so that it sh;ll not run away. As soon as the dog scents the deer, it goes directly toward them, ami when it is quite near, it grows ex cited, and commences to jump and to jerk the harness-trace by which the boy is holding it ; being a well trained hunting-dog, however, n never barks so as to frighten the deer by the sound. The hunter now knows from these excited actions of the dog that the reindeer must be close at hand, al though he cannot see them for the log. So he tells his son to hold the dog and remain in that spot while he takes his bow or gun and (trawls cautiously forward in the proper direction. I'.efore he has gone far. probably not more than twenty or twenty-live yards away, the huge forms of two or three reindeer loom up through the fog. II he is a good hunter he will at least bring one down, and perhaps two or three of them, and so have something for supper. When there is snow ou the ground, the boy will generally take two or three dogs along, and often a reindeer is killed, will use them to drag it into the snow house. As the little Eskimo loves excitement, this is good sport, and in this way he soon learns to hunt quite well. St. Nhholax. If you have a had cold. Sine's Syrup of Tar will euro vou. Only 25c.
