A great uncle of Mr. Vas.s w-as on tiio famous boundary oommis-i.n if 17c to run and establish the line b. tw, t n Virginia and North Carolina. H- was an Episcopal miniater, and Mr. Vans ha some notes of his preachiug in North Carolina. We take thus extract: The religious aspect of the colony is further shown by our chaplain taking a turn to Edenton to preach the gospel to the Inridels there, and christen their children. Hr was accompanied thither by Mr. Little. on of the Carolina Com missioners, who, to show his regard for the church, ottered to treat him on the road to a fricassee of rum. T'uey fried half a dczn ranhers of very fat bacon in a pint of rum, both of which being dished up together, served the company at once both for meat and drink. Most of the rum they get in this country comes from New England, and is so bad and unwholesome that it is not unfre quently called kill-devil. In Edenton there may be foaVyor tifty houses, moet of them small, and built w ithout ex pense. A citizen hjre is counted ex travagant if be has ambition enough to aspire to a orick cnimney. Justice it self is but indifferently lodged, the court j house having much the air of a common tobacco house. I believe this is the only metropolis in the Christian or Ma- I hometan world, where there is neither j cnurcn. cnapel, mosque, synagogue or any other place of wor.-hip of any sect 1 or religion whatsoever. What lfttle devotion there may happen to be is much more "private than their vices. The pswple seem easy without a rainu- 1 ter. ao long as they are exempted from paymg him. Sometimes the society . for propagating the Gospel' has had the charity to seud over missionaries io this ' country; but unfortunately the priest' has been too lewd for the people. . r. which olTtener happens, they too iewa for the prieet. For these reu-si ns ti.e.-e reverend gentlemen have always left their tlocks as arrant heathen as tl.ev found them. This much, however, mav be said for the inhabitants of Edenton. that not a soul has the least taint if hypx-risy. or su perst 1 1 1011 . a t iihc hi y frankly and above-b ur i in nil th. irex- ! cesses." Here Mr. For.'. ..:.- "preached in the court house, for w ant i f a 0 c- secrated place, and made no less than I nineteen of Father Hennepin s Chris , Hans." At another place h- .is. "we 1 christened two of our landlord's ehil dren. which might have remained lull dels all their lives, had we n. t . arri-d Christianity home to his own do. r. The truth of it is. our neighbors of North ' Carolina are not so zealous as to go 1 mucn out 01 tneir way to pri oue mis benefit for their children, otherwise, being so near Virginia, they might, without exceeding much trouble, make a journey to the next clergyman, upon ao good an errand. Among the reports a very interesting on- was made on the sub ject of eiluca- li- proposing the establishment of ir biblical schools, with othermatters .f leral literarv interest to the de nomination. A resolution was offered, signed by L'r. T- J. Todd, of Tenn.. G. F. Taylor. II P. Walker, and others, calling for a change in the rubric of the church touching the invitation to the Lord's Supper. The resolution proposes that th- invitation shall be. "All that do truly and earnestly repent of your sins an 1 intena to lead a new me. living in lov- and charity with your neighbor, etc. " instead of ''All tbat do truly re-p-nt of your sins and are in love." etc. Several disciplinary amendments to the proposition reauiring Bishons to f- consult presiding elders in making ap pointments, were submitted , the com mittee having: reported nonconcurrence with the proposition. Dr. Kelly moved to strike out the "non. " and made a forcible speech in favor of the proposition. Lrs. Whitehead and Winfield sup ported Dr. Kelly. Drs. A vote was taken, and the original resolution was lost. A paper proposing to arrange the An nual Conferences into a permanent Flpiscopal Diocese, was read, but was lost when voted on. A resolution was ollcred that Sunday school superintendents be not allowed to serve more than four years. Also, a resolution to appoint mission evangelists. Both were referred. A prolonged discussion waa had over a resolution that acceptable matter for publication in the adyertising columns of the Cliristian Advocate (the organ of the Church) be not refused because of the unfriendliness, real or supposed, of me parties seeamg to advertise, tne resolution was finally referred to a com mittee. Yesterday morning, after an illness of several months duration, died Miss Hanna Willard Taylor, daughter of the lato Richard N. Taylor, aged 22 j years. ' She ivati born in New Berne, N. C, and came to Mobile with her parents about eighteen years ago, so that all of her life has been really spent here, among people w ho have learned to love her for her excellent qualities of mind and i heart. Miss Taylor was an earnest ! member of the Presbyterian church, and labored long and faithfully in the cause of the Master. In social and re ligious life she will long be missed. The deceased was a woman in the best sense of the word; that type of w oman in whose character is seen the essence of a divinity, gentleness, purity, .spiritual refinement and charity; the woman whose life 6eemed a beautiful ray from the Deity to brighten and ele ' vato all those on whom it fell. She died I as she had lived with an abiding faith j in the heavenly eternity. In the last weary hours of a lingering and tenacious disease the beauty of her being mani fested itself. When that dark angel death stared her in the face, right gladly she welcomed it. What fear had one , so pure'.' Her last thoughts were not of I self but of those who were naade sad by : her absence, to each ol whom she gave a word and to some more a tear. Her j death leaves a blank in the hearts of an . extensive circle of friends which not even the hand of time will fill. The funeral will take place this after noon, at half past three o'clock, in the . Jackson street Presby terian church. I'M'uU: lit jitter. DIED. In this city.
