Uraud Democratic Rally at Harper's
51111a. Lrsolr Contr,
The Democrats of Trent and adjoin
ing townships of Lenoir county had a
grand rally at Harper's Mills on Thurs
day last, at which our townsman,
Clement Manly, Esq., and Capt. W. A.
Darden, of Greene, the. nominee for the
Senate, ware the principal speakers.
M. A. Gray, Esq., tho standard bearer
of the Democratic party of the county,
was present, but declined to make a
speech, aa his opponent was not present
and a joinl canrafs havic
been agreed
upon.
The speakers were introduced by that
sterling and fire-tried Democrat, Jesse
c. Kennedy, Ksq., in appropriate and
fitting words and acquitted themselves
handsomely. After the speaking the
barbecue was spread and everybody ate
and ci rank to the success of Gray, Jim
Sutton . Hodges. Grav. B.ss. 1 1 . D irdin,
Allen and Simmons.
We regret very nun h ..ur ina
bility to respond to an invitation to be
present. Harper s is cne of the eldest
Democratic precincts in the county. It
ia where we used to attend the elections
when Allen Wooteu. Colonel James
Davis, Henry Cunningham, Blackledge
Harper. Richard Nobles and others used
to be the Democratic pillars. It is where
we first fell into ranks with about one
hundred others to go forth to battle for
the great principles of Democracy as
promulgated by Ji tiers.' n, Ja. kson.
Calhoun and others. Many changes
have taken place sir.c this band of
patriots were first commanded to "right
face" by Capt. W. T. Woolen. The old
men that were tho re to encourage with
words of cheer and comfort to those
who were leaving their cearetCt and
dearet-t friends, have pact "over the
river." Ujdv uf the ha. e, hearty, and
patriotic Joung men who were there
mustered into the service of the Con
federate States, were left upon the
bloody ti. ids of Virgin. a and Maryland.
But amidst all these sal change.-,
through aii the trials and misfortunes
that befell tbe South, the people of the
old Tuckahoe precinct in Lenoir o unty
remained true to Democratic principles:
and they, doubtless above a!! ethers,
rejoice that the party of tbe.r life long
choice is again assuming control of the
government. The y ung men that have
grown up imbibed tho swntimems of
their f .refalhers and today the old j rt
cinct retains the hen r of lemgthe
banner Democratic p wn.-h:p in the
county. It would have be en a real

eie piuceu upon tiie ticket for the
Legislature, thereby capping rind put
ting a mushing to a set of names that
Craven in its palmiest days perhaps
uau not exoeiieu.
This action has alreadv resulted in
the creation of a good feeling, hitherto
a stranger to our people: it has brought
nearer togetner an classes of our people
who having a common interest are anx
ious for good government and seek and
adopt any honorable means of obtain
ing it.
The support of this ticket i-i a pure
business proposition: it presents itself
to the sensible man as a good business
venture, the result of which will be the
dislodgment from effice and the preven
tion of obtaining office of a set of men
who have no interest in the community,
who are the disturbers of tho public
peace and destroyers of the good will
and harmony that should exist among
our people: it appeals to every lover of
order, every honest man, every good
citizen and deserves not only his indi
vidual suffrage but his warmest exer
tions for its success. Every Republican
who seeks the purification of his p.irty
should support it and every good Dem
ocrat who desires good government
should uphold it.
Vote for C lition.
N't'MBER LOt'K.
s.t the time the coalition movement
was inaugurated it was supposed that
the only opposition it would meet,
would be from tho element to which we
have hitherto alluded, the corrunt wirif
of the Republican party. but the move
ment had progressed but a short time
when it was discovered that another
source of opposition was in existence
and of so determined a character as to
surprise those who learned of it: it was
so unexpected and seemingly motive
less at nrst, that it was difficult to ac
count for it. but as time progressed its
true inwardness was made plain and a
scheme unearthed so inimical to the in
terests of Craven county and this im
mediate section as to almost startle its
discoverers. It is nothing more or less
than the existence of a foreign syndi
cate, working with secrecy and in the
oarK to obtain the control of the A. A:
N. C. R. upon such such terms and con
dit'ons as would tie hand and foot the
people of this community and place
them at the mercy of a foreign corpora
tion to whom it would be needless and
useless to look for" fair or equitable
treatment. This syndicate sought to
carry out its plan9 with and through
Gov. Scales. propositions were sub
mitted, but the Governor demanded
more than the syndicate were willing
to grant and here occurred a hitch m
the proceedings. The Governor was
not willing to assume too much and
hence- it was mutually agreed that the
whole question remain in abeyance
until the legislature met. when with a
ring formed in the mean time bv the
syndicate their propositions- would be
put through.
Outside of the State, the couuty of
Crayen being the largest bondholder
and its people being more interested
than any other section of the State it
was expected to easily control and in
fluence if, it was argued that a llussey
or a Green or men of similar calibre
would be nominated by the Republican
party, of course elected, and that there
would be little or no difficulty in blind
ing their eyes to the character or mag
nitude of the proposed scheme: that
members from other portions of the
State not having a direct interest could
be "influenced ' and all would be plain
sailing. These nicely matured plans
received a violent shock when Hon. C.
C. Clark received the coalition nomina
tion for the Senate, his election meant
death to a project fraught with so much
danger to our people and this foreign
syndicate through its local representa
tives resolved that ho must be crushed
by whatever means: his election they
know would prevent the pis.sage of any
measure that did not guarantee tin
fullest and most complete protection of
the interests of Craven county and this
section, that he was fearlcs-. vigilant
and incorruptible and must br ,;. ,'eati d
at all hazards.
This could only be accomp! i-ht .1 l y
-triking hands with that element of tiie
Republican party who caring only for
their own individual success and per--onal
aggrandisement were ready t"
coalesce with any uio to insure the suc
cess of tLcir ticket. Tnat there is a
practical working combination between
the Halm faction and certain railroad
men is a fact beyond dispute, the proofs
of which we propose to furnish further
