I ol a dealer in tsaltimore or New York, and for Lis irnpudeuee in presuming to buy from the factory at first cost he is made to pay something over Jin dollar freight for what usually cost fifty or sixty cenhs. And this u only a Jut illus tration of how the thing works in other goods. The immense fruit crop produced in Middle and Western North Carolina cannot le bandied in the East unless it first takes a trip North, because the freights are absolutely prohibitory. For the same raason no one in New j Berne can buy rustic furniture from I this Asbeville factory The abnnd ant sweet potato crop of the Kat cannot be eaten by our Western brethren unless it goes in boats to Norfolk and Richmond And then over tbe It. & P. Kosd. And it is so with oar fish and oyster products. We are informed that the freight on a barrel of fish from New lierce to Charlotte is about double what it is from Savannah to tbe same point, and so it goes all the way through. The people of Eastern and Western North Carolina are absolutely prohibited irom having any commercial relations what erer. Yet the primary object of bailding the N. C. It. and the A. & 5. O. was to give tbe people of the State facilities for developing their reaoarces and bringing them into a closer relationship commercially Bur, as the Obterrer rightly says, we ought not to qoarrel with the li. & D. corporation for making all the money they can out of North Carolina railroads. Tbey have bought tbe right and are entitled to use it for all that it is worth. The State has sold her right and her Dps are closed for fifteen years at least. All we can do now is to object to any farther lease at present. The K. O. E. with the A. & N. C. as an outlet would be perfectly mdepeud- ent, sad able to do something for tbe baflding np of the towns oi the State. WAJJTED-HABMOXT. The following editorial from the 2ew York rar strikes the key note for the Democrats. Il is better to observe the coarse here marked out than to denounce Sam Kandaxl and bis followers as traitors: There are numerous theories in explanation how one congressional district and another were lost to the Democrats at the recent eleo tton. This much may be gathered, that what the Democratic patty ruoet neeos at this time is harmony on the tariff question. All Democrat s admit that war taxes should le reduced, and that the tariff laws should be revised. The time has come for each wing id j the. party to come to some agree- I meut, adopt some common ground! on which all may stand. 8uch a consummation is uct so . difficult and. we trust, not so tar off as our Republican adversaries supjKise. U wts even sus pected that the Governor was in directly encouraging opposition to Mr. Clark, but this must have been unjust to the Governor. We believe he has the interest ol the whole people at heart, and if he errs, it is an error of the head aud j nQt o( tfae heart j Tfa e S(ug and n.,(Tr(Yi U1 A well considered article, which we repro duce, gives strong reasons why the lease should not be extended. The T . . . 'I . - - 1 1 . 1 JUL uAi. wiut' to huii a nuuujn aud the N. C. K. li. should be con solidated and become one road. No extension ol the lease of the latter road should be made unless the former is included. The in terest of the State at large and the interest of this community in par ticular demands this. It has been the policy of the li. S: I. to force our eastern corn aud oats over their line, via Richmond. This will remain their policy so long as they control the N. C. K. K. and have no contro of the A. N. I' ll, li. We agree heartily with the -acrrer that North Carolina cau manage her railroads with advan tage to her people if she will. Every town on the railroad from Morehead City to Charlotte, should ship its products and receive its goods, coal, lertilizers, etc , by way of Morehead City and New i, . tii ti r . v .Tl I ierne. uey wuuiu iuruisu sum cient traffic to maintain a line of steamers at both points, and freights conld be so regulated as to build up onr manufacturing towns. and encourage an interchange of products between the eastern and western sections whose people are now almost strangers to each other. Here are the objections urged by the A'rtr and Obsrrrer to an exten sion of the lease. We hope they will be well considered by the board of directors before the propo sition is acted upon: First, this is not the time to con sider it. The lease has run but fif teen years and has fifteen years yet to run. The road has been opened for traffic hardly more than fifteen years before it was leased for thirty years, and now while lif teen years have still to elap&e be fore the directory can legitimately take counsel concerning the future of the property, it is proposed to lease for another long term. Again, the circumstances of today are not the circumstances that will exist fifteen vears hence, and it would be a leap in the dark to re new the lease at a time so long in advance of its termination. North Carolina in fifteen years will con tain fifty percent more of popula-1 tion and we hope a hundred r , cent more of manufactures and ot i wealth, and the situation will be vastly different from that of today. But secondly, the road wjus char tered and was built chiefly by the State in order to promote the con venience and prosperity of North Carolina. It was intended to be a local road. It was laid out for a State highway . The prime object of its construction was the development of North Carolina, and it was not built with any view to facilitate inter State travel or traffic. The purpose ot the lease is to promote inter-State commerce, and the local business of the road is with the lessees en tirely a secondary consideration. Its nse as a North Carolina high way is subordinated to other uses not at all interesting to our State or people. I nder the lease the whole Char i acter of the w ork has buen changed. W e should not. therefore, be so much in love with the lease as to yy i-h its continuance. Nor i- there any (inaiicial lu-ce--ity reipnnng a lease.
