E. Bizzell, O. Taylor, R. B. Kinsey and D. M. Stanton. The crops as seen from the roads ar ' not far enough advanced to give an opinion as to their condition. In some : places cotton was planted and coming up. in others the crop was being put in. In some sections plowing in the corn crop has commenced. We visited Kinston last Thursday and enjoyed the band-shaking of many i of our old friends and acquaintances. Kinston is a progressive town, and we noticed, among other improvements.' the fine hotel being erected by Dr. Toll We had the pleasure of an introduction to the vv Prts local editor, and spent a time pleasantl y in his office. Major Barrett, postmaster, and Bob ScroDg. aaeistant. are as clever gentlemen as we wish to meet, and the time spent with them was very agreeable. A British Steamer Burned. A dispatch from Savannah. A communication in this issue, from one fully competent to do so. makes a good suggestion about school history. We do not understand why Stephens's history is not universally used in the schools of the South. The register of deeds h a received copies of the revenue act and have them ready for the tax listers and as- M'sorj who arp required to meet in each township on or before the second Monday in May and el-ct one of their number chairman I On Neuse street, just above the resi dence of Mr. William Marshall, there is an elm tree that is fifteen feet in cir- cumference five feet from the ground. Tradition runneth that it was planted by Governor Spaight. Ii is a monarch of its kind. We fear that from the in judicious and careless trimming of its huge limbs, ere long it will decay. In addition to changing the hour of sailmg to 5 o'clock, the boats of the I E. C. D. line make four trips a week, that is Mondays. Tuesdays. Wednes days and Fridays. The extra Tuesday trip will put truck in Philadelphia and New York in time for Friday morning's market, an important sales day in both cities, as out of town buyers purchase their stock on that day. The district court has adjourned, after a brief session cf four days. It is a plea-sure to have this tribunal convene here, as it brings these gonial gentlemen. Busbeo, Peebles and Rich ardson to the city. They, with Clerk Lehman and deputy marshals S. R Street. jr., and W. B. Boyd, make up a most agreeable and pleasant set cf court officers. J. V, Williams, proprietor of the Fast Frai?ht line, ran Monday into the board of city council from the second ward, making close connection, but when the obstacles he had to overcome axe considered . it was a glorious vic tory for him. The ejection in this city Men lay passed oft quietly, though there wa much interest in the 2d. :U and 1th wards. In the lit ward there was not much interest manifested and only a light yote was polled. Fat Williams, the Democratic nominee, had a walk-over, receiving 90 votes to Nelson. Republi can. 7. and Wooten. 1. In tne 2d ward the contest was be tween E. W. Hancock, the nominee of the Democratic primary, and J. V. Williams, independent Democrat. The Republicans d ivided . a part going for Hancock , but a majority of Williams. Throughout the them for day both , gids claimed the election for their favorite candidate, Hancock's friends seemingly being the most confident. The count proved, a tm. each receiving 71 votes. The registrar gave the cast ing vote for Williams. In the 3rd ward the Contest wa.s be- J tween Thos. Daniels, the Democratic nominee, and B. B. Lane. Democrat, who was no: a candidate, but was voted for by the Democrat who opposed Mr. Daniels and by a majority of the Republican voters. notwithstanding they, the Ripublicans. had a candidate in the field, A. A. Bryan. The result was Laue 72. Daniels '59. Bryan 10. Kin the 4th ward the contest was be tween V. A.Crawford, a coalition Re publican, and the regular nominee of , the Republican convention, and W. W. Lawrence, an independent Republican. It was a strong tight against Crawford, : who has ben a member of the board for many years, and was read out of , the party by Henry Dewey's paper re- j cently. The resalt was Crawford -5. ' Lawrence 72. j In the 5th ward the contest was be tween Henry P. Canady, the Repub lican nominee, and N. H. Styron, Inde. pendent Republican. The result was. Canady 297 votes, and Styron 191 vote. On the school question there was a light vote. ?'') votes were cast, of which adl were for schools and '.Y.V.i against schools. By wards the vote was: in the 1st ward, for schools 7V against 11: 2d ward, for schools 122. against 11: o.l ward, for schools 111. against 11: 4 th ward, for schools 61, against 7; 5th ward. for schools. 191. against, 2'V). If there are any names on the books that ought not to' be there, it is not right to count them against schools. Facilities for Mi I p pi us Truck. Among the many facilities !"r ship ping truck from thi community there is no better way than by the A. & N". C. Railroad. There is no danger of mis.-ing connection and the truck always gets to market in good time and in good order. Then there is a great deal in having vegetables a short time on the route. There is no transfer from car to car. all the cars going through to the water terminus without change since the general change of gauge last year in which the Atlantic road took the lead of all the other roads. In addi t; in. there can always be found ready buver- at the freight depot who give g-- i r-ri This naturally indu---s' many small producers t take th-;r j truck to the depot for a market. 'F h e railroad is running a fast schedule for the benefit of shippers, and is anxious and prepard to do all it can for the con venience ot its patrons. Any sugges tions conducive to additional facilities for shippers will be glad ly received and acted upon whenever possible. It is evident to every one coming in contact ; with the railroad people that if courtesv and attention to tne wants of the ship- I pern avail anything, this road will have a good proportion cf the truck. The fad: tru'k train leaves the depot daily at ') o'clock p. m . Saturiays an 1 Sun days excepted. Tlic Aiiicrlrnn Hui; TI J. Tile m ist exciting elect; n k.-id in Trenton for many years was that of ia.-t i Monday. There are thirty-one voters! in the town, ail Democrats but one. There lein no Republicans to make a ti'ket. the issue was made on' the 'piestion of preventing1 hogs from' running at large on the streets. So they ha 1 a h 'g ticket an 1 anti-hog t;c ket. 1 no contest waxed warm ail day. (ne of the candidates made a speech in favor of the hog. declaring that he was no more a nuisance and not o much so as the cow. He was op posed to depriving the iiou of his liberty . while the dirty cow was allowed to roam at larg-e. Late in the evening it was found that the vote stood fifteen to iifteen. Then there waa a struggle to get the 31st 1 voter. uie reiusea to vol, in tne rt ... , ., meantime, the registrar, having cast his vote, had been excased and had gone fishing. The 31st voter was then ap - pealed to to vote one way or the other and untie the hog.
