The warehouse of the Trent river Steamboat Co. and -,' re fer, be:: of elf ; sp to this writing, Tuesday all them are all right. The general opinion among the level heeded political thinkers about here is that Tbos. J. J arris is the man to run for next Governor and Lenoir will doubtless favor potting him up. J. T Hall of New Berne was here last week patting electric bells in Or. Toll 's new hotel. This boase will be ready for opening about the first of September and will be supplied with all the mod ern cooTenieBoiee. W. B. Griffin of Dover was before I". S- Coosmiaeioner D. E. Perry last week charged with selling liquors without license. Tho evidence showed that the prosecution was malicious on the part of the informing witness and Mr. Griffin was dhKharged. There is a little whispering around tbaa there is a plot on foot to surprise very body at the coming stockholders meeting of the A. & N. C Road by a proposition to lease the concern to the W. et W. This story, however, haa not gained much credence. Jkn, Ooje was In town Saturday with a hag loggerhead turtle. He caught it a SoatAweet mill pond and it weighed when cleaned eighteen and three quar ter pounds. He had to quarter it up like a pig in order to sell it. .'as no one wanted to tackle so much turtle at once. - Mr. Perry who was bittsn Monday by the mad dog. above referred to, ia now a great believer in Dr. Pollock 's No. 7. He applied it on himself immediately after being bitten and has no bad effects whatever from the bites. The horsee oo the other hand, that were uncared for. are suffering badl . R. H. Boon tree, jr., has been ap pointed as Indian storekeeper with headqoarteas at Rosebud, Dakota. He left Monday for the above named place. We dislike very much for Bob to leave ns, and lincrely hope he may return un cajped and as clever as when he left K Inst on. Several years ago a mill pood up Neose river, in which had been placed by the owner a good stock of German carp, broke and emptied its contents, fiah and all, into Neuse river. This ac counts for the fine carp that are now occasionally taken from this stream by the fishermen. Sheriff Sutton, accompanied by So licitor Allen, ia off to Washington. N. C, to take in custody the thief that stole Mr. Bam. Howard 's horse about a month or so ago. The horse is at Marion. S. C, where he was sold by the thief. He seems to have a mania for stealing horsee, having also stole one at that place, making the third one that he is known to have taken. The much talked of cotton factory seems to have died out suddenly. Boainess men, however, do not blow much about what they are going to do bat generally let the work speak for itself. It is to be hoped that the busi aees men of Kinston are of this sort and will have the factory under way before the gossip rs will have time to dis cuss it. A mantle q sorrow and grief was thrown over our town last Saturday morning by the sudden death of Mia Dora TUghman. She had been con fine i with typhoid fever for sometime, but was thought to be getting better, when unexpectedly to her friends death claimed her. She was about twenty five years old, was of an amiable, sweet dispoaitaon and beloved and reepected by all who knew her. The crope of this county, taken all in all, are looking well. Edmund Taylor of Woodington township reports beet stand of cotton ever had. corn looking welt, in good condition but rather wet. John B-Noble of Pink Hill reports more cotton planted than last year, and that cora and cotton are both looking well and in good condition. Lemon Smith of Woodington reports cotton crop good bnt corn not quite so good. Not so mach cotton planted as last year, condi tion good. 8. J. Heath of Neck town ship, crops looking well, about the usual amount of cotton planted . all in good condition. Wheat crop an eiya one, J. T. Askew of Lousin swamp crops nothing extra but the people are getting better. Zenaa Gooding fro.n upper Jones county, crops all the way from his place to Kinston looking well. Such is the general verdict throughout the county but the critical period of the orop is just approaching and a too wet or too dry spell will materially change the prospects. The lecturer then presented a learned and masterly analy sis of the beautiful female characters of Tennyson's story. He told us of the passionate and faithful devotion of Elaine, and showed how in the delicate pencilling of Tennyson s genius she is the unequalled portraiture of all that is devoted, self-consecrated and perfect in woman. Ho gave us the poetic and ethical interpretation of the low, soft song in the niht. which is the touching pathos of the story of Enid. And he strongly contrasted with all this maze of loveliness the satanic character of Vivien, full of treachery and guile, weaving snares for the unwary feet of Merlin, an I bringing the very eclipse of ruin upou all that she approached. Of course it is impossible, in a news paper i. :ioe. to do full justice to this learned disquisition. It was a side of English Literature dimly known to the many, and seldom thoroughly explored even '.y the few. It was even reckless ly speculative, and in its suggestici of a connection, even in the fanatitvM and in most 1 brains of dreamers, with the stern, the new j practical developments of christian new hotel he I truth, far-fetched and illogical. But after saying all this, we doubt whether an address its equal in ability and scholarly tinish has as yet been delivered to the Assembly, and whether its superior will ever be presented to that cultured body. Pro fessor Hume is no orator, but an im passioned student, a very idolater at the shrine of tho English tongue and history. His thoughts and language come to us with the skill of the artist. It is impossible to catch the delicacy of his touch, or to track the outgoings of his analysis. But we should think that the University had acquired a strong professor when it placed hirn in its corps of teachers. Tbe subject of Miss Corrinne Harri son's lecture was "How to Teach ." It was a well-written pper and was well read. Her voice is not strong enough to (iil ti.o large hall, but the teachers gave her strict attention, and doubtiess there are many who will be glad to see it in print for future reference. New Berne is already commeucing to have its deserted look, caused by our citizens seeking the seashore and the mountains. A number have gone and others are prospecting. Those of us who find it inconvenient to leave will have to join the ' 'Cant 't-get-a way Club. " and after all. New Berne is by no means a disagreeable place to spend the summer. Situated at the junction of two broad rivers and in close proximity to Pam lico sound, the largest on the coast, necessarily makes it susceptible of a constant breeze, and that which is pure and bracing. A location on either of the river f routs or in any of the elevated buildings in the interior of the city will convince vou of this fact. Tourists seeking a mild and salubrious climate, and where epidemics are al most unknown, will find in New B.rne a place where they can spend a pleasant and quiet sojourn. Not only are her people noted for their hospitality and peaceable disposition, but many other inducements are offered to those seeking health, recreation and sport. In regard to the former, our mortuary statistics bear the strongest evidence, comparing favorable with the best localities. As to recreation and comfort. Hotel Albert speaks for itself. It is a building that would do credit to a city of a hundred thousand popu lation. It has all the modern improve ments and is lirst-class in every respect. There are also within easy access of the city good grounds for hunting quail, duck, wild goose, turkey and other game. Plenty of fishing grounds are in easy reach, and we defy any one to show prettier sailing waters, and that right at our doors. In other words. he reason why many of our own peo ple go away for ths summer is because it is high-sounding, "you know," to summer it off from home. Why we have had so few strangers to spend the season with us can no longer be attrib uted to tho old stereotyped phrase. 'You have no place to stop at." That has been remedied.
