Hi honor, the owl, freed himaeif from-captivity by biting the rope which he ,i tied in two. aid to get even for hia imprisonment ridded the proprietor's chicken coop of its con tent, on or two chickens. A number of Kinstonian left for Ne Bees Tueeday to witneae the celebra tkn which was to have taken place July 4, but postponed on account of the bad whether ancil that day. A few boys from thia place pulled themselves tofttber to teach the New Berne base bail etab. The score stood in New B-rain. Mr. 8. P. Moore, Mrs. S. E. Webb and two- colored persons died last week, making a total of four within a week ok leas time. I have never known the health of the place to be as bad as it now is. But Kinstoa is not the only place suffering with this almost always fatal malady, dysentery. Hardly a Siate paper do we pick up but you see accounts equally as bad ir not worse than in Klnaon. Cases r Cox, a noted negro desperado ia Jones county and si escaped con vict, cam to grief a few days since on hie old stamping grooAd. He set fire to Mr. E. 8. He was tracked to Vine swamp, near by, where be received as a reward for his rascally deeds, the contents of a double barrel shotgun. Ha has for a number of years been a ware of great annoyance to the ntrxeos of Jones as well as this county. Hope be may rest in the shade. HappeBlBrs A round Dover. Very wet and more rain. Health of this vicinity tolerably good. Crops sre looking well for the sea sons. The steam mill business is on a boom ii not for so much wet weather. Oar new railroad agent, Mr. L FLnes. steps arousd lively when he sets the train coming . a new thing yet to him. The truek is all gone and with it that broad smile as seen on the faces of the truckers only a few of them having- made anything clear by trucking. Our Sanday-echool, we feel sat ii fled , would prosper more than it does if it waa not for that little society rule adopted by the ladies of Dover, which is that they positively will not be seen in eoeapany with a widower, and you know ail neighborhoods and towns have their little rules governing; society, whether it is right or wrong we will not say. Oar Mr. Bines with his efficient set ot mill hands has done such havoc among the pine forests that he will be compelled to move his mill soon and we learn that be contemplates moving it out near his lumber yard at the station. Oar Mr. Clay Parrott is also doing a lively bueinee sawing, one mile from . Dover. Us is cutting ceiling principally j which be ships as fast as be cuts it to J j Strauss fc Co., at Goldsboro. But the words had not more than escaped his lips when the hum cf the Elijah Ellis told him that he had been deceived : the rear gauge of the Fllis had been shut off so no one could tell how much steam she had. As quick as thought after the Elijah Ellis begun to hum the water spurted out at the nczzle and in just 2 minutes and 52 seconds after the word "fire'' it was thrown across the fifty feet line. Hats tlew in the air and a retular "rebel'' yell was given for the Ellis. But now the "chow-chow, chow-chow," of ihe New Berne began and in l':33 she had put the water across the line. The record made here by the New Berne is undoubtedly ahead of anything in the State, and that made by the Elijah Ellis probably beats the world. As these engines were constructed by the manufacturers, the New Berne'was beyond question the quickest steaming. But the ingenuity of our New Berne firemen of the Atlantic Co. was brought to bear upan the Elijah Ellis and an im provement has lately been added which makes it the quickest steaming engine in the country. The manufacturers ought to reward the Atlantic Co.. or the inventor of the improvement, liber ally. Ijultiiss they will do it. But is it true that our quiet city has 1 onlv her nast to he nroud of ' Has she UU'J UBr P"1 lo UB prouu 01 . nas ne no talents, no resources, no elements of ability and strength to make bar re spectable in the present ? If wo could do so without seeming to boast, we should like to paint her as she stands today amid the purple shadows of her crown of elms, powerful in everytliina; except the opportunity to make hetUBlf : '"e't in politics. She has no son occupy - 1 'n8 prominent offices of State, she fills i no conspicuous position in the halls of ! legislation, she is a stranger to the dignities of the Bench, and even the conspicuous honors of education are be stowed upon others. An adopted son of hers, loyal, strong and faithful, will go to the next Congress, but even his good fortune is due more to political skill and management than to the po tential claims of his constituency. And yet we do not hesitate to say, that there is as much genius, talent and culture in New Berne today as in any city of equal population anywhere on the face of the earth. We have a score of merchants, whose very faces would command at tention in any mart or port of com merce. Our physicians are men of science, carefully and thoroughly educated, full of ability and resources, and equal to any emergency. Our pulpits are filled by strong, practical thinkers, and earnest, effective preach ers. Among the memhers of the legal' profession are some, who as counselors, advocates and astute masters of the law, would hold their own before any tribunal. Our scholars, orators and writers will challenge comparison with the best products of Southern capability and training. And aB to our geographi cal position and material resources, they are unsurpassed if equalled in any dis trict in thia country. Now if all this be true, why haye we not accomplished more in the intellec tual and material achievements of these later days V Our political disabilities are a heavy burden to carry, but they will not explain the whole measure of our failure. The fact is we have had no self cocli lence, no self-assertion, and no harmony of popular purpose. What has been ono man's meat has been every other man's poison. The posses sion of high mental endowments, in stead of being a passport to public sym pathy and support, has been a fiery cross sent out to gather the clans of ig norance, prejudice and opposition. The inspiration of leadership has been the 9ignal of personal hate. Every man has been an Augustus by reason of his own self-created talents and authority, and the public weal has been driven to the wall. Instead of cherishing a pro found local pride, nursing our young men of promise and honoring our old men of genius, tak ing a keen interest in the best blood of the city, and stimulat ing it by words of burning tenderness and zeal, we have left every aspirant to struggle at his own oar, and all our chaplets for the aged have been woven after death. How are we to build roads, improve lands, develop water and steam facilities, erect factories and enrich the country .unless we can combine and util ize the business capabilities of our peo ple? A careful estimate of what we wish to do, a thorough exploration of the possibility of doing it, an accurate knowledge of the means at our dis posal, and then a hearty and enthusias tic application of these means, this, in our liumble judgment, is the unvary ing road tosucceis. We cannot begin by carrying our confidence and honors elsewhere. Our own prophets and priests are as good as those of any other country. Let us take gratefully all the help that we can get, but be sure that we fully use and appreciate our own agencies. If we comply with this rule, we shall soon find that our talents are bringing a good interest. We shall discover, that the preferment of high mental fac ulties, an equipped, educated brain and ability to deal skilfully with business will bring unmeasured wealth and influ ence to the city. Men will cease to be martyred for their independence Prejudice will perish from among the 1 ble. We learn that it will be built on a people. And in the place of diyided I lot owned ty and ad joining the parson energies and clashing interests, we shall 1 age. have a thorough unity of purpose in all j we undertake. Money is so scarce in our section that every one we meet with is lik old uncle Jimmie W said by his supply of meat, "Nearly out and none at all." The rains continue with us. Several of our farmers are not quite done lay ing by their corn, crops having been too wet to plow for the week. Crops are looking well. We learn that Robert Ward, colored, who is a very industrious man and quite an exception to his race, has been quite sick for several weeks. We learn from his physician that he is getting better. We have often heard it remuiked that hog cholera was always preceded by an empty corn crib. If so farmers had better be giving their hogs lime and salt to ward it otf , as empty cribs are plentiful in our section. We fear that when the high waters subside we will have a full crop of chills. We hope every one will stop visiting the river swamp fishing for a few weeks, or else have at band a full supply of quinine, the great chill anti dote. A stitch in time is eaid to save nine. Wrould it not be a good idea for us to scatter a plenty of lime and copperas around our premises and have a thor ough cleaniag up during this hot, wet weather, as it might save us a doctor's bill. We learn that our friend G. T. Coble has been feasting on nice ripe water melons for about two weeks. However Morehoadites know how to nianngo the orchestra. Two ingenious jokers, a lit tle while ago, being without musical taste, paid some colored boys to rake up these merry musicians and fill a barrel with them. It was covered with cloth, labelled "TERRAPINS," and sent by freight up the road to an expectant agent at station. How glad ho was of the present. The train is oil. Now for a good dinner. How tha mouth waters! OiT with the cover. Around gathers the usual depot crowd. Jerusalem! Whew! ha! ha! What a rush out of that barrel! Morehead was still awhile, but is now vocal again, for curses come homo to roost. The welkin rings with bass and treble, piping and roaring, meek and impudent voices. Somebody may ex pect a shipment of terrapins soon, if the sun does not take up these waters.
