Since that article was written the -tatement has. been made in The L'om.'nuMou that lucerne and al falfa weie nor the same. This is an error. Lucerne was lirou.'h' to the I'nited States at li:t Hoin southern Kurone. Since the settle- ment of California, seed has been brought t o t he Atlantic States from ( 'alifornia under the name of ''Al falfa." Hut it is the same old plant aken from southern Kurone A ro Chili and other South American countries, w hence it worked its way to ( 'alifornia under the name of al falfa, liurr clover has e similar history. It is a plant of southern Europe, known there as "Spotted ' ''; Mediek." Carried thence to South America, it found its way to Cali . lo; uia. and t hence spread over the i : eountry as "California ( 'iover." It I-! is a lueertie, not a clover proper, y'' havinpr the characteristic curled up ''j poil of the lucernes. The pod i ,o,i covered with little projections; hence the name Burr clover." ".a. U'his burr ( lover is not sutlicient ly a;iireciated an forage plant, par ticularly in the warmer portions of the cotton States, where light soils prevail. Unless very highly ma nured, ned clover is apt to die out on such soils during the drouth of summer. l!urr clover being an annual does die out. but not until it has made ample preparation for a new growth as soon as autumn rams set in. It seeds in May and (lies and tlx seeds pome mi nnn. taneously in September. It makes very early growth in spring, indeed t here is nothing that affords an ear lier bite or is sooner ready for the blade. If the soil is rich, it may be grazed or cut trtl April, and will then mature seed enough to re-set the land before it dies. It may be loiioweu oy a crop ot corn on same land. After the corn is laid bv t, f.loT r wjH com n the bef. ,. ,.;,,.; i fl,. l " " ""."ul""' fe' ' corn. The rotation ot hurr clovei and earJy maturing com. is an ex cellent one. Now for the other side of the picture. Stock are not natu rally fond of burr clover. They must be educated to eat it. This is true to .some extent of red clover. Some animals wid mt eat it at first sight, but they can be educated up to ic. And so they can to eat burr clover and become quite fond of it. As to its nutritiousness and value when eaien. there are no dif lei ence of opinion. The cultivation is simple. Make the land rich. Apply, say thirty loads of manure per acre. Then add three hundred pounds each of acid phosphate or bone ineal- and kainit, and plow in lightly, or harrow in with disc harrow. Sow five bushels of seed in burr; per acre, harrow in and roll. Do this early in September, or toward the gulf in October. The next crop, in our estimation, for winter feed is barley. It is not altogether as hardy as rye, though enough so to stand the very severe w inters during the last live or six years. It is also more fastidious t-uan rye, preferring loamy soils to heavy clays. But if the latter are thoroughly plowed and harrowed, will grow well on them. Tike all ether rapid growing plants, barley must have a good supply of avail able food. Well-rotted manure, cotton seed meal, acid phosphate or kaimt. to be applied at time of seeding, with a light dressing of nitrate of soda in early spring, con stitute its bill of fare. Say thirty loads manure, duo pounds acid phosphate, dun of kainit, HOo of cotton seed meal, and, in Eebruary. TO pounds ot nitrate of soda as a top dressMig. Sow- seed from first of September to middle of ( ctober, according to latitude. It has been said that barley is a fastidious plant. As an offset its quality is of the highest. No better forage w as ever grown, and no plant, per haps, is more free from disease. Let evt ry farmer have a barley patch. Make at least one acie ex ceedingly rich and sow in barley, ilegui at once to plow and harrow and get into finest tilth, and be ready by the lirst ot September. W. I.. '.U. in Atlanta ( onstitution.
