Like the Star, we would not ac ense Mr. Tucker of actiug from mere sordid considerations, but we "are so often puzzled at the position . , Assamed by lawyers when the con ideration of a fee causes t lit ir zeal to oat run their judgment, that we cannot regard Mr. Tinker as an XCption. Wheu he appears be fore the United State Iloueol Dprentatives in defenoe o( the Democratic construction cf the Constitution, it is Mr. Tucker, the tateema3 ; in behalf of the An archisis, it is Lawyer Tusker. Oc casionally we see the lawyer and statesman blended in one. bat we ofloer find-th latter posing a.s tlM former tiiau the former riaiug to the dignity of the latter. When Mr. Tucker comes to argne the Virginia case he will be found shrewd euoogu to show that the position he aasanied ia the An archist cased is net ut all applicable in this. De will there be arguing aca.se in which the positions taken will be in harmony with his feel ings; it wiil be a blending of the lawyer and statesmau. and the ar gamenfia the Anarchist cases will be nowhere. It is fortunate for the country that the Supreme Court was not mach impressed wirh Mr. Tucker's startling doctrine, and that the AnarchisU will get what they jasUy deserve. THE U0YEB50R STATEMENTS -HEBE THEY ACCURATE r The Raleigh correspondent ot the Wilmington Messenger says : "ine e lerne joiunal at tacks yoar correspondent tor his letter giving Governor Scales' Tiews on the desired sale or mort gage. The facts and statements were those of the Governor and they were accaate. with the excep tion of one matter, which Is miscon strued. In the proposition to sell the State's share, the Governor meant simply to state that the road eot nearly 2,000.000. that the State's share was two thirds of it. or 1,2C0,000, and that he was asked to sell this State stock for about 25O,00O. Ue had nothing to do with the private stockholders and meant to speak of the State stcck alone." Then the statement that the com mittee proposed to add 700,000 to the present debt of the A. . V. B. for the parpose of extension is, re-asserted by the Governor to le true. Prominent members of the committee that waited on the Governor assure us that no sacb proposition was iunde. In view of the fact that there is an effort to make the suggestions offered bv the com mittee appear a.s unreasonable as possible, it is important that the facts shall be known. TVe fear the xealoas friends of the Governor in their efforts to excuse him far not aiding the people of the Kast in an Important enterprise, are putting words in his mouth that he did not use. This correspondent says the GoTernor states that a proposition was offered to pat a second mort gage on the A. & ". C. ll. for 700,000, in addition to the present debt.
