We publish in another column a com munication in regard to a bridge acroes Neuse rlyer, and it ia a subject worthy of the consideration of our magistrates and county commissioners. The nook hrld by Craven county in the A. & N. C. R. could not be converted into a bet ter purpose than a bridge across Neuse rivr. It would increase the value of the land on that side of the river be cause it would put a market for the pro duce riht at the doors cf the owners. A gentleman who owns lands in thit section and who is also a magistrate, but lives on the south side of the river, recently told us th:t his land on the north side were valued at one thousand ' dollars. "I would be perfectly willing.'" said he. "to have the valuation in creased to two thousand dollars if the I county would build a bridge acroe ; Neuse river.'' The pebple on that side of the river, as Mr. Gaskius tugests. are taxc d an nually more than their State and ccun 1 tv taxes in crossing Neute river. The increase in the value CJf tUe property in tht part of the connty. would pay the 1 cour.tv to build the bridge. The stock owned by the county in the A. & N. C. R will more than build it. Such an ob jection is indeed frivolous and ought not to be entertained by an enterprising, progressive peop e. Another objection which is urged by some, and which appears more just and reasonable, is that the road would bene fit only New tierne and it is not right t-i use the credit of the entire county wh-n the city alone is to itap the benefit-. Wt might wiih just us much reason aud force sy it is wrong lor the people on the uorth side of the N-usu river to be t ned to keep up a bi i de across Trent river. If thii railroad will build up New Berne, bnrg more people here, make ita bttter market, enhance the va.ue of ci'y property, th-j god will be fell by every man in the county no mat ter in what section he lives. I. would be impossible for the county to aid in any public improvement thit would not benefit some one portion more than an other, but there is none lhat will be of more general hem fit than something that will build up a town and make a mirket for the farmers' produce. If New Berne had a population of fifteen thousand instead of seven there would be double tbe de mand for chickens, eggs turkeys, fresh pork, beif. &c . ic. there is now; the property valu.ui.in of the city would ue three millions ic.-lead i. f a million and a hal and tji:-s would correspond ingly decrease bt-ciuse there would be more property to tax. A road from New Berne to Wilming ton and a bridge across Neuse river are tue two things that wi.l btiog new ousintss and put New Berne on a for ward move. A careful study of the Bu: j--ct. it seems to us. will convince an j one that the investm-ut will pay.
