Six years ago Sunday tha Daily Jocr nal first appeared on the streets of New Barn. Daring that time no issue haa failed and no day except the proper holiday ha failed to have the Journal laid before our patrons. Whatever suc cess has attended its efforts to promote the general welfare of the community in which it Is published, ha been done as much to the kindly inclination of our patrons as to the efforts of tbe editorial 3.50 3.33 8.00 o I management. No paper, however ably edited, can be of much value to a com munity unless it can impress that com munity with the ideas and opinions ad vanced by it Nor will the mere preeeion be of value unlees they lead to action. This, we flatter ourselves, the JotTUiaL has done on one or more casioos. Bat the Journal is not what we want it to be nor what we intend it shall be. New Berne ought to support a paper with the pree dispatches and we shall never he satisfied with the Jotrnal until we are able to lay before our readers every morning the news from every quarter of the Cnion. This we could do If every business man would feel, as he ought to, that a ive news J papeaCs a necessity and that it his duty to support and encourage it- With thanks for past patronage we promise to pre forward in our efforts for Eastern Carolina, confidant that by continually holding up its advantages and resources we shall in the end reap the reward. New Berne High School A Literary Society Organird. Prof. Neal, of the New Berne High School, ever with sn eye single to the educational interests of our community, has succeeded in organizing, in connec tion with the High School, a Literary Society, composed of the older and more advanced students of the school. The Society bears the name of Kalmatheeian Society. The following are the names of the officers chosen: President John S. Thomas', vice president. Miss Hula Nunn, treasurer, Miss Bertha Cutler; secretary, Roeco Nunn. j The object of the society is to develop the literary attainments of the students, mala and female, in essay writing, com position, reading, and other ways for their mutual improvement. The pupils seemed to manifest a laudable zeal in forming this essential auxiliary in ma turing and perfecting their educational work, in which they will receive the future earnest co-operation of the prin cipal. This society and its manifold advan tags will add vastly to the educational interests of the pupils, shaping their literary manhood and womanhood, and forming a bright nucleus, around which their memories and sympathies will cling with increasing delight in dsys to corns. May they abundantly prosper in this worthy enterprise and win glorious honors to crown their mid-day lives. A New Way to Cross a Stream. Tbe treasurer of the late Fair Associa- I tion and one of Nsw Berne's brightest attorneys attended Jones Superior Court on Tueaday last, leaving New Berne in a buggy together. The heavy rains on Monday and Monday night had much swollen tbe streams and on reaching Bearer Dam near Mr. Joe Bank's place and after getting in the stream they ooacluded that it would be safer for them to take the foot log. The treas urer concluded that he could walk the foot log and drive the horse, so he reigned np near it and got out of the buggy bat made the mistake of putting tbe attorney in front. When they were fairly landed on the log the word was given to tba horse which moved forward into the stream , but the attorney being in front of tbe treasurer instead of mov ing on so that the treasurer could keep np with the horse dropped astraddle of tbe log with hie legs in the water and jumped along about six inches at a time. Tbe treasurer wss compelled to let go the reins and soon the horse was swim ming and the buggy out of sight. The horse was kind enough to wait on the opposite side for the arrival of his com pany who came up in about the same condition that be was dripping wet. At the next stream the attorney stuck to the buggy and kept out of the way of the treasurer's walk on the foot log. Of course they both had important business or they would not have taken such risk in crossing the stream. The attorney was bound to go in the interest of a client and the treasurer with equal zeal was looking after the interest of the new Fair Association and we are glad to say was quite successful. Foreign Appointment. Rev. L. C. Vsss. D.D., of this city has been appointed by the General Assem bly of the Presbyterian Church a dele gate to the World's Presbyterian Coun cil, to be held in London July 3d. Dr. Vase has been no titled that he is ex pected to attend, and we are in hope that he may find it convenient to do so. He was on a similar mission four years ago at Belfast, Ireland, and the many interesting letters furnished the Jovb during the four months' tour are pleasantly remembered by many. ataj. Barrett's Communication. We publish elsewhere a communica tion from Maj. W. J. Barrett in reply to X" in Tuesday's issue. We wish to say that we did not know what Federal officer wm referred toby "X" when we made our comments on the communica tion as there are about a dozen or more Federal officers in the county. The Major puts the matter in a differ ent light. There is certainly a mis understanding. Jarvis' friends want him to be Governor for four y ears and many of them desire Senator Hansom's return to the Senate. Then why should there be any conflict between them. Acquitted. Tha ce of State rg. W. J. Perry, charged with the murder of Willis Venler, cd., tried at Jonea Superior Conrt laat week, cloaed on Thursday, resulting in the acquittal of Mr. Perry. We learn that onr talented townsman, Clement Manly, Eq , who waa of coun sel for the defendant, displayed in tha examination of the prominent physi cian who were present as expert, such knowledge of surgery and anatomy that he waa at onca dubbed "Dr. Manly." Final Meeting of Old Organization. The New Berne Fish, Oyster and Qime Association held their final meet ing Monday and decided to .turn over to the new organisation tha funds in their bands, which amounts to over seven hundred dollars. We have a canning establirhment h-ro which should be kept constantly going through the winter and spring. We must use every mans to spread information in regard to this industry, ani we know of nothing better thin this address. The Economist say. We desire to give all the publicity to the excellent address of Lieut. Winslow , of tha Oyster Survey delivered at the late Oyster and Game Fair at New Berne. It is an excellent address, abounding in good sense, practical sug gestion and full of facts and statistics about oyster culture in North Carolina. Lieut. Winslow is no ordinary man. and oysters he has made a study most of his life and is master of the subject. He is doing a valuable wark for Eastern Carolina and is developing a new indus try that is destined to bring wealth to our people. We hope our own people will read his address and not wait for outsiders to come among us to develop a business for us that we should ex smine aad develope ourselves- We have so often spoken of this subject and Illustrated the profits of the business hy reliable figures that we will not here undertake to restate them. We only say that we believe no business now followed by our people will compare in profit with oyster culture. THE LATLST Nil',lS Condensfd from our K xcliiUitre-i. Henry Irving has gone to Europe. It is reported that Jim Blaine's health is very bad. The Georgia rains are flooding the rivers, and tbe damage to crops will be great. The great ram i-tor m in Alabama still continues. Great da'uage has been done by the tremendous ilod. and travelling is at a standstill. The remains of the late Chief Justice Waite were interred at Toledo. Ohio. Thursday. Business was suspended and the attendance was very large. A coal mine explosion occurred in Missouri Thursday. whih entirely wrecked the mine and buried over one hundred miners in tho debris, the greater portion of whom are supposed to be dead. The striking switchmen are rioting in Chicago, and the police had to interfere to protect the new men. aly one man was arrested, but this precipitated a strike of oyer two hundred men on the St. Paul road . This cheap excursion inaugurated by the Southern railroads are bringing thousands of prospecting visiting from the North and Northwest. Railroad men estimate that fully live thousand were brought South on the last excur sion. At the meeting of the Detroit bar the other dsy, to take action on the death of Chief Justice Waite, Senator Chas. W. Jones of Florida, who has been reported as being oil his mental balance, aro.-e and amid the most profound silence spoke in a very eloquent manner of the late Chief Justice, lia address was a great surprise to his hearers, and they were inclined to believe that the seedy condition of the Senator is due to his being a yictim of a political conspiracy, as he has declared. It is the shipping of marl up the country by Mr. Vine Allen Tolson. He has accumulated a considerable quanti ty of it at the depot and continues hauling it unfavorable as the weather haa been. Spring has been backward. March has had her fuil share of the blows besides borrowing April's showers, so we look for good weather from now on. Mr. Charlie Hard ison and W. A. That is to say, your lungs. Also all your breathiDg machinery. Very won derful machinery it is. Not only the larger air passages, but the thousands of little tubes and cavities leading from them. When these are clogged and choked with matter which ought not to be there, your lungs cannot half do their work. And w hat they do. they cannot do well. Call it cold, couch, croup, pneumonia, catarrh, consumption or any of the fam ily of throat and nose and head and lung obstructions, all are bad. All ought to be got rid of. There is just one sure way to get rid of them. That is to take Boschee'd German Syrup, which any druggist will sell you at To cents a bot tle. Even if everything else has failed you. you may depend upon this for certain From Pamlico. The farmers are badly behind; too wet to plant. Messrs. B. F. McCotter and Samuel Campen, two energetic farmers, are nearest ready. The rice crop will be large this year if the bugs are not too destructive. The county convention is approaching with Capt. S. Lane for representative and Chas. A. Flowers for sheriff aa the favorites. Capt. Lane ia one of our best farmers and will work for the county. Charley Flowers ia one of the strongest men we have. Trot him out for sheriff and he will weed out the Independents. New Ditch. don't experiment. You cannot afford to waste time in experimenting when your lungs are in danger. Consumption always seems, at first only a cold. Do not permit any dealer to impose upon you with some cheap imitation of Dr. King's New Dia covery for consumption, coughs and colda, but be sure you get the genuine. Because he can make more profit he may tell you he has something just as good, or just the same. Don't be de ceived, but insist upon getting Dr. King's New Discovery, which is guar anteed to give relief in all throat, lung and chest affections. Trial bottles free at R. N. Duffy's drug store.
