American Magazine ... -- - - i "Oh. You Giddy, Giddy Girls'. Yes. it is true that there are eid dy girls in the world, and perhaps there are more in this age than any since the foundation of our liepub he. Giddiness, or as it may be termed, lack ot seriousness, is natural to the fair sex. They are as a rule less solid than men, are more easily interested, and are inoie receptive. It is natural that they should be, or they would not be so fascinating or so lovable But while this is so, an extreme of giddiness is a disease, and should be treated as such But who is responsible? The fact is that parents, teachers, and preachers are responsible for very much ol the giddiness of girls i-or though giddiness is uoru in them, ,it is easy to control it Teach them that this is a matter-of- fact world, where onlv those can live who are prepared to face its stern realities. Teach the girls that Nature docs not owe them a living, but that they must win it for themselves. Teach them that life is full of seriousness; not that there is no joy. no pleasure, no laughter, but that there is a time for mirth, even as there is a time for serious thought and earnest work. A giddy girl will make a giddy wife, who will dress as ex travagantly as her means will al Ijw; will be always Hitting Irom f.a"-'.'i .i"jc ul.6UU when in society ; but who will allow .e-.i .. : i uie couweus 10 accumulate iu me bouse: w ill neglect to sweep under t he bed , because no on e w ill see the d ust ; aud will compel the husband io tiiinK mere ia no piace iik3 nome. because other places are brighter and happier than his own. A giddy girl will make a giddy mother, and perhaps live to hear her own child curse the giddiness which blighted its life. Beware of giddy girls. As for giddy men, they are so un natural, so thoroughly out of place, that the lunatic asylum or a mon key's cage is the only natural resi dence for the cigarette-smoking, toothpick chewing, corset wearing, giddy dudes, whose every existence is a libel on manhood. The Strength of the Anarchists. The decision of the court was that the prisoners give a justified bond of two hundred dollars for their ap pearance at the next term of the Superior Court. The Republicans held their coun ty convention Saturday last and elected Frank Green, white, and Albert Powell, colored, to their State convention. Durant Harri son, white, and George Bryan, colored, were elected to the con gressional convention by acclama tion. The best of good feeling ap peared to prevail. Two aspirants were present, Mr. L. J. Moore of Craven, and Mr. Cheatham colored, of Vance county. Cheat ham's claims were presented and pressed by a Mr. Y'oung, colored, of Vance. Mr. Moore was loudly called for, who told them if he were chosen their standard-bearer they might expect from him an old fashioned canvass from one end of the district to the other. Mr. Moore remarked that tha Democrats would surelv nominate Simmons who was an able man and up with any in political tactics and could make very plausible arguments to the people. His advice was to select some one who was able to meet him, as to Mr. Cheatham, he had been promised bv nis party tne po sition of Register of Deeds of his countv, as for himself if he failed before the convention he had no office to fall back on, and would state he desired the office and if elected would be very polite to all, and would send everybody seeds and books. Cheatham was called for and responded : said he was able to meet Mr. Simmons and could give the district a thorough canvass, and really thought that any colored man who had educated himself since the war his claims were entitled to consideration by his party; thought that he could do something for his people ; could get some of them appointed to a part of the offices and thereby dis tribute a little of the government money, so as they might helpsup-i port their aged fathers who had spent the prime of their lives in slavery. Mr. Moore received the unanimous endorsement of (he convention. Ilonses Should Now lie Heuled. It is particularly necessary that houses should be heated during these damp days. Air in cellars circulates through upper stories with perfect freedom, and if the furnace goes out below, chill rapidly penetrates above. It is better to have a warm room, with open win dows, than sleep where the air is both damp and cold. In maDy parte of the country there is a fixed date to extinguish winter fires, and commence that annual sacrifice to filth that is called house cleaning. But if in remote periods that date was a guarantee for summer's ad vent, times have changed, and we may now look fora cold north-east storm that has-been regular enough to have earned the name of "the May storm."
