This cut of the canal is six miles long
at the north end of which is located the
government gas works. From this gas
house lights are supplied for the line
through Coinjock bar, Currituck sound
and the black water flats. Through the
el flats one is reminded of the street lamps
of a lighted city. Three large pipes
about twelve feet long are put together
in a peipendicular position and filled
with gas every two weeks. Of course
they have to burn night and day, it be

but don't remember Mr. Davis. "
"I think I remember him," said the

Reflecting upon this conversation and
the manifest ignorance on the part of
these two soldiers of one of the most
cruel, personal and vindictive persecu
tions of a defenceless man by a great
government, we thought what a blessed
thing it would be if that page of the his
tory of this great country could be
blotted out and future generations be
as ignorant of this incident as those
two soldiers. But our space is out and
we must close. A pleasant night at Old

While the tonnage of the road
has been much increased we have
been forced to accept a lower pro
portion ot rates to retain the busi

doubtful if the through tonnage
can be further augmented, and we
shall have to look to the develop

It is an unequal .-druggie this road
has been maintaining with its
powerful competitors, and it has
done well even by the closest

eventually make it a valuable
property.
The gener al condition of the road
has greatly improved during the
past twelve mouths, and your in
spection of it in every detail is
cordially invited. It has been a

employes, and all have cheerfully
bent themselves to the increased
labor demanded of them. It is with
great satisfaction That wo behold
