When the Southern States went from the Union there was one thing they carried with them. It was that graiul, glorious Listrument, that work of brave patriots and saga cious statesmen, that best model of .civil government which human virtue or wisdom has ever devised tho Constitution of the United States. Loud applause. And when we returned again to this Union we found that same old glorious- Constitution and at this day plain, honest North Carolina stands the peer and the sister of magnificent New York. Applause. : There is one thing that has been in my heart ever since the war termi nated, and I tell you my country men, my American countrymen, thatondav before vesterday. for the first time, it seemed to me that I before these eyes close in death i they might see the deeire of my I heart fdlfilled, and it was this. In I English history, when the Wars of 'j the Roses were over, the eons of 1 Lancaster joined in praising the 'deeds of York, and the eons of 'York gloried in the manhood of ; Lancaster, and their deeds con jointly were weaved together in order to form a couplet wit which ! t hey might crown their old mother England. May the time come when the glorious deeds of the Union soldiers and the equally glorious deeds of the Confederate soldiers may be taken and weaved in one chaplet. with which we will crown ad America. Applause. And when that time comes, tnen my countrymen, will come the day when the national mauseleum to be erected to our great leader, Abraham Lincoln loud applausei will only be equalled by another monument erected to onr Christian Southern leader, Robert Edward Lee. Loud applause. And then a monument erected by a grateful country to the large hearted, and honorable soldier, Ulysses S. Grant, 1 loud applause , will be equalled by America's monument to one of the greatest suiuiers oi moueiu times, Stonewall .lackson. Loud ap plause. When that time comes, and come it will, every one in this broad Uuion may take the poet's own words and sav : placed at the minimum, so as to give a11 a chance to secure the benefits of the institution. This college bids fair to do a great work in this State. It is in good hands, and there is a great future ahead of it. Charlotte News. A Colored Hero. Just below Natchez and at about 0 o'clock in the forenoon there was a wild shout of "man over board," and the engineer at once got the eignal to stop, Those of us sitting aft saw a black man strag gling in the water a few feet astern, and as we rose np to throw him a life-preserver a second woolly head appeared beside him. Some one had jumped in to rescue him, and he did his work well. The first one was a poor swimmer and badly frightened, but the second had a powerful stroke and was evidently at home in the water. He seized and held the unfortunate np until they drifted down and a rope was thrown them. "By George !" exclaimed the col onel as they were palled in, ''bat that fellow deserves a medal!" We rushed down to interview him, and as he leaned against a pile of freight, wet bat not a bit ex hausted, the colonel said: "My man, that was a brave act. Did yoa see him fall overboard?" "Why, I dun chased him ober !" was the reply. "How?" "He dun stole my terbacker an' I was arter him. Dat's what I saved him fur didn't want to lose all dat plug!'' The pick and shovel have let the modern public into the family secrets ot people who perished at the commencement of the Christian era. More than eighteen hundred years ago, a shower ot fire, ashes and boiling water buried many a fathom deep the city of, Pompeii, the most dashing place in Italy. Today the palaces of its "first families" are traversed by strangers from all parts of the civilized world, and the habits and modes of living of its former residents, patrician and plebeian, are indicated so plainly by the relics that have been disentombed that he who runs may read. Several of its inhabitants have been discovered in such a state of preservation as would en able any intelligent coroner's jury te determine the classes to which they belonged when living, and the peculiar circumstances under which they met their fate. Iii one of the mansions thns un covered lay the crumbling shape of a lady, evidently the mistress of the house, and by her side, in the re mains of what once had been a sort of reticule, were ninety one piece of silver money, two pairs of ear rings, and a finger-ring of gold, together with some keys. She had evidently been" surprised by death in the midst of her honsewifery, and in the -same attitude a pos tnre of agony in which she breathed her last, in the days of the Evangelists, the antiquarians found her skeleton form. The web of tbe drapery in which she was clothed was visible, and its fineness indicated that the wearer had be longed to one of the first families of Pompeii. Near her were the remains of a little girl, who, child like, had thrown a portion of her dress over her head when the burn ing storm burst over her. In the same building that contained these relics of a Roman mother and child of the first century, several other members of the household weredis covered, each silent figure telling ts own sad story of sudden sur prise, attempted flight, and mortal agony. It seems that the loafers of Pom peii, like those of modern cities, were in the habit of senbbling vul gar jokes on the walls' of houses, and some of these, which have been brought to light, are said to be very funny. Among the domestic curiosities that have been disin terred are sixty loaves which were baking when Vesuvius turned the whole city into an oven and barbe cued a considerable portion of the population. With the exception of Jerusalem and its surroundings, there is no locality on the face of the earth more interesting to the traveller than Pompeii. There he can see with his own eye how well to-do Romans employed themselves in the reign of Tiberius, peep into their kitchens, their larders , their wine crypts, their dormitories, and though the symposiarch no longer reclines on his conch in the banquet hall, surrounded by the wits and bon vivants and men-about-towu of the imperial capital, there is likely enough to be lound in some corner of the silent mansion, enshrined in volcanic pnmice, a shape of dust that once was he, and which, per chance, had hobnobbed with jolly Sallust, the historian, whose villa still exists in good preservation. TYonders of Philosophy. The polypus, like the tabled hydra, receives -new life from the knife lilted to destroy it. The fly spider lays an egg as long as itself. There are four thousand and forty- one muscles in tbe caterpillar. Hook discovered fourteen thousand mirrors in the eye of a drone - and to effect the respiration of a carp, thirteen thousand three hundred arteries, vessels, veins, bones, etc., are necessary. The body of every spider contains four little masses pierced with a multitude of imper ceptible holes, each permitting the passage of a single thread, all the threads to the amount of a thou sand to each mass, join together .when they come out, and make the single thread with which the spider spins its web; so that what we call the spider's thread consists of more than four thousand united. If we would do more for others while we may, we should have less regrets, when too late, that more more had not been done when "it might have been."
