Mcrils of Southern Women. Northern women have always had a good many queer notions about their cousins down this way, and the queerest of all is the notion that the Southern women are not practical. On tbe contrary, the women of tbe South take to busi ness as naturally as a dnck does to water. They have not the ten dency to isms that the fair North erners boast of, thank the Lord. Their way is to take things as they find them and make the best of the situation. Without the least, ap pearance of effort or sounding of torn toms thej- go quietly about, paying their own way, and their failures are too few to talk abont. It was nothing uncommon in old times to see a woman riding about in the fields bossing the negroes and the overseer. She usually supplemented this care on her own account with a general supervision of the country side, and her mas culine neighbors were only too glad to consult her on matters of com mon interest. Many a debt-burdened estate has been freed by the feminine turn for detail, ri faculty that too many planters lacked be fore and since the war. Sunny South. Atkinson's Economic Conclusions. The judge seemed somewhat moved by the boy's story, but he neverthe less, after hearing the evidence, condemned him to six weeks' im prisonment. As the boy was being led away, a poor woman, pale, covered with rags, and her hair all in disorder, lorceu her way through the crowd, and tottering up to the boy, passed one arm around him, and then turning to the judge, pushed back her long, black hair, and exclaimed: "Do you not recognize me! Thir teen years have passed since you deserted me, your wife, leaving me alone with my child and my sorrow; but I have not forgotten you, anil this by whom you have just con demned this is your son !" Yon may imagine the effect this announcement produced on the bystanders. The judge, in a loud voice, ordered the woman to be carried from the court, and then left it himself: but he joined the poor creature in the street, and carried her and her bov off in a carriage.
