He went to work and by June, 1S85, had succeded in putting down about nine mile of new steel rails out of the earnings of the road, and with the beat of the old rail taken out put the entire track in the best oondition it had beea for year. His summer schedule for 1385, mail and passenger, only lacked thirty minutes being as fast at Mr. Bryan's in 1389 with new steel rail on the entire line, and he run it without accident. The High School, under Professor Adams and his accomplished assistants. and the Oraded School, under the same general management, offers every facility for an academic and classical education to be found anywhere out- fide of the leadiDg universities of the country Profesor NeaP Private School, with high, intermediate and primary studies, will rank with any icslitution of its grade. With Mr. and Mrs. Neal as teacher, connected to this community with many chords of sympathy, this school will command a liberal patron age . The Vance Male and female Academy. Professor Skinner. Prin cipal, u a new institution in our midst, but the gentleman at its head is well known in the surrounding country, and it is believed that the Academy will draw a large patronage from abroad. Mrs. Jerkins stands deservedly high as an educator. Her discipline i firm, her teaching thorough, and her pupils distinguished by their ladylike deport ment and gentlemanly bearing. Hurrah! for our schools. If there is anybody who can't be satisfied with tbe school fociltie in New Berne, there i no place where he can find rest for hi soul . Board of Public Cbaritie. Wa do aot tnink tbat Governor Fowle would be guilty of intentional usurpa tion. We believe him to be wise, hon orable and patriotic, but we seriously qaeotioo hi right to create a Board of Public Charities and appoint its mem bars. It seems to as very clear that the Governor has usurped prerogatives that belong to the Iegitlature. While we believe that hi act, in this matter, is nul and void, we canuot withhold the expression of our approval of his selec tion of men to constitute the board . so far as we have tbe pleasure of knowing them. No man in this community is mora highly esteemed than Dr. Charles Daffy, and his presence on the board would he accepted as a guarantee of wise and equitable administration. g review of the S. S. Work in this Disttict.'. lie commenced by saving that the subject was seemingly an easy one, but that he bad found it to be quite difficult to be accurate in getting reliable information, owing to the magnitude of the district. In it there were seventy three organized churches with a member ship of six thousand s-ouls and five hundred teachers. Particular stress was laid upon the importance of tbe selection of teacheis for these schools and having ilrim open ali the year round, also to the great indillerence on the part of parents as to their children attending Sunday school. Having good and live superintendents was another matter of no little importance. Throughont the district every town and vil lage had its Sunday Schools, but, he regretted to say, there was not thai advancement he would like to see; in fact, a compari son with the statistics a year or two ago Was somewhat unfavorable. To conduct Sunday schools properly there should be sufficient funds to defray necessary expenses, and to run them successfully, without it was a false idea. Places of worship should be made comfortable and at tractive both winter aud summer. There should be maps, charts, black boards vc. It was a splendid address and given the best of attention. The convention adjourned at four o'clock after a most profitable and pleasant sitting of two d3ys in the beautiful and hospitable tov.-n of Kin-ston. An Ue 10, 1SS9. Kin st in, N. C., Aug AFTERNOON SESSION. Meeting assembled at three o'clock, p.m., i resident Line in the chair. After singing praises and prayer, the regular order of business was taken up. The proceed ings of the morning were read and adopted, and upon re-calling the roll, the following additional dele gates were found to have arrived: Kin ston. Miss Capitola Grainger; Ml. Olive, Mr. Hines: Rocky Mount, Mr. Best. The first topic of discussion was. "How may our Sunday-schools be made more eftioient,'' by Y. C. Ormand. Mr. Droned began by saying that the sub ject of Sunday-schools had been so ably discussed in. the forenoon that he was afraid he was unable to interest his hearers or tell them anything new. but in following him along bit line of dis course we soon discovered the advance- meet of new thoughts acd ideas. He said that to have a good Sunday-school you must have a good attendaoce, acd to have a good attendance you must in terest the pupils. He favored award cards, banners and books, also the ap pointing of committees to go out into the highways and heiges and induce children to attend. That exercises where children are present Bhould be short and varied, and that it waa the duty of the. teacher to be well posted on the lesson. Also, as had been previously urged by former peakers, great responsibility rested on the supenntecdent acd parents. Ke marks on the above were offered by W. W. Rose, L. W. Crawford, W. 8 Hone, R. A. Willis and N. A. Hooker. The next subject was "How may our young ladies and gentlemen ba retained as active members of tbe Sunday school, " Rev. J. E. Thompeon, Leader. Rather than make a speech himself, be expressed a preference tbat tbe subject be taken up by a number of speakers and discussed from its various standpoints. He had labored many years in the cause principally in the rural districts, but had not yet discovored any plan of re taining young ladies and gentlemen in the school. If they possessed a horse and buggy they were most sure to take Sunday for driving. That they would go ten milee to hear a new preacher instead of attending their own Sunday school which in all probability was in sight of where they lived. This brought on a sharp and rather sarcastic reply from Ur. Robey. He wanted to know if the young people were more delinquent than the older ones, and if so, why this delinquency '.'' His argument was rather a peculiar one, and we confess that we scarcely knew how to take it. Presid ing Elder Willis told the Doctor that, even in the earnest way he had express ed himself, he did not think he meant all that he had said. This brought no explanation from Dr. Robey which to us added to tbe mystery. The debate was further continued by M. M. McFar land, I. A. White. J. 0 Jackson, J. W. Bryan and Mrs- Atlas lihodes l'citiup Knot Race lor ( h.unpioollip of 1 Ye States. Ti. loot r .co of yesterday morning cy n. iiit' i uf tne various lire com panics in the city was a feature of de cided interest, and created much com ment as to the possibilities of some of the runners in making better time or of the possibility of one scoriDg a victory over another. Tms talk led to an ar raogemeot for a running race between Pittman, of the Columbia fire com pany, of South Carolina, who had run one hundred yards in tec and three quarters seconds in the morning race. and Daniels, of the New Eerne fire com pany, whose morning record was one handred yards in eleven seconds. The time set for the race was 7 p. m., and the distance was one hundred yards, Pittman is the champion run ner of South Carolina and is the pride of the Columbia boys. Daniels had never claimed nor had he ever been ac corded the championship in this State, but he is well known in college athletic circles, and there are sorae good records to his credit as a swift runner. The New Berne boys, backed by their State friends, pitted Daniels against Pittman, yesterday , acd the action can scarcely be called anything less than a contest for the tunning championship of the two States. There was no public an nouncement of the race, but several thousand people found out all about it, and at 7 o'clock had packed themselves all along the running course. State pride and patriotism arose and the greater measure of sympathy was for Daniels as a Tarheel. The sympathy at first was cot very substantial, for bets freely ottered by the South Caro lina boys were scantily and gingerly taken. Just before the start, the South Carolinians offered to bet two to one that they could Dame the winner and found no taker. It was learned after wards, however, that several North Carolinians who knew their man had taken bets as they found them: and aB a consequence mere were several nun dred dollars at stake on the little rum At exactly seven the runners were st the starting point. Pittman was in a white uniform with bare legs, compact, well proportiooed and every movement appeared to be one of elasticity. Dan iels was in a hremen s running uniform Lie was nervous, but determined-look ing, and his general carriage and ex pression plainly said that if he was beaten, it would be by fOme of tbe prettieet running ever oen in two States. few minutes after seven they toed the lice and started at the discharge of a pistjl. They shot down the short course at a rate that would have carried them a mile had it been kept up for tw o and a half minutes. The friends and backers of each yelled and screamed encouragement, and hurrahed and hal looed and bellowed and grew generally wild with excitement and hope. The race was over so quick more was no time for speculation about it, and in deed there was hardly time to get a good glimpse of the runners. Daniels touched the line about four feet in ad vance of Pittman. and then 'Tarheel dom" went wild. They crowded around the victor and almost smothered him in giving congratulations. They lifted him high above the heads of the crowd and carried him fifty yards or more, everybody whooping and yelling like mad: and there were thousands of peo ple making the noise. In fact the ova tion given Daniels would have delighted a victor in the great Olympian games unless his demands in this line were in satiable. The cheering waa kept up for several minutes, and was joined in by the South Carolinians, who evident ly thought that any man who could beat their champion deserved all the praise that could be given him. It may be claimed now that Daniels is tbe champion runner of tbe two States of North and South Carolin a. Raleigh Call. The Browii!.
