While our monifd men are supposed to be foremost in the step, it does not entirely depend upon them whether we shall have manufacturing or not. But let us all join hand-, and determine to make some effort. It's folly to say that our people have not business tact and are lacking in energy. There is no reason for it. Misfortune ia no respecter of persons, and we be lieva that a good live man, even if he meats with ill sueceea, ia worth more to a oommunity than tbe timcrous miser who lives for self and on'y puts down oc penny where h e sees two in reach. Itv.vnxirgp. j For a period of about eight weeks they wandered about in the wilderness on tbe Catawba river, the heads of New rivar, tba mulberry fields, and th mountains, in a friendless endeavor u find a tract suitable to the purpoae de aired. All tb tracts they had aurveyed having proved too small for the object in view. Meanwhile winter had set in: their aupply of provisions, though used very sparingly, waa entirely consumed, and they bad to rely on tba exertions of the two huntsmen who aocompanied them. But even they, though well ac customed to tbe roving forest life, be came discouraged. Game waa not ar expectad, the pastures for tbe horeer war acaroe and they were in dang, r ot absolute starvation. After three days of fasting two deer were shot which greatly revived their strength and courage. Following the direction of their com pass eastward they reached the river Yadkin by tbe end of December, where ib-ey wera tendered, and gratefully ac cepted, the hospitality of a few humble while settlers, for a few days. In this neighborhood and by tbe direction of thhsve settlers, they at last found the de sired tract which they vainly sought for too far west and too much up in tbe mountains. A large tract of rolling woodland well watered and aparently well adapted to their purposes was dis covered . On Decembar tbe a27tb. 1752. at the southwest of the Wachavia tract the surveyor commenced and by the 13th of January, 1753, had surveyed four teen parcels of land which contained an aggregate of 73,037 acres. Bishop Spangenberg and hia companions then returned to Pennsylvania, but Mr. Churton surveyed five other parcels which with the other fourteen amounted to SeS,9So acres. Tbe whole tract was called Wachavia because of its re semblance, on ancount of the water oourees and meadow lands, to a valley in Austria of that name, which former ly waa in poaaeeaioo of the Zinzendo rf family. Oa August tbe 7th, 1753, John Karl of Granville, conveyed, according to the desire of Zinzendorf . by nineteen deeds, the title of the tract in tbe forks of Gargalee or Muddy creek. Rowan county, to James Hutton of Lineon. Secretary of the I'nitii t'ratrum. We will not follow the Brethren through all the vicisitude of paying for this body of land, but as a matter of interest will state that, by dividing and subdividing tbe large countyof Kiwan, this tract tras been at different periodr in the counties of Rowan. Surry, Stokes and Forsyth, where it now is and is likely to remain yet many years. Id 1T79 Jamea Hutton conveyed by deed this land to Fred Will de Marshall, Ad ministration of tbe unity in Wachavih who became tbe legal proprietor. Mar shall had came to North Carolina ae attoraey for Button in 176S but during the Revolution, feart were entertained that the land might be confiscated as Mr. Button was an alien. But the leg tslatare of North Carolina in 17S2 re verted in F. W. Marshall his heirs and assigns forever the Wachavia tract and all other landa in North Carolina which had bean acquired by tha Brethren, which be held up to hia death ia 1302 Then Rev. Christion Lewis Beczien was administrator to 1311, Lewis D. Sch weinits np to 1877 at which time the balance of theaa landa wrre purchased by tbe Southern Province of the Mo Rtviiif CnracH, and the office of Administrator or Proprietor became extinct. Baying gotten the land locat ad and ita title established we will next ravi w tb settlement by tbe Brethren of BaTHaBOBO now generally known by the nana of Ot.D Town which is about aix miles autani rrom tne progressing twin city of Salem-Winston. V i Ini ingt( n Star : The Cape Fear river rice planters says that their crops are tbout ten days later than usual, and none of them expect to begin cutting oefore the first of next month. But though the crop may be late, the rice bird is on time aa usual, and has al ready rus.de his appearance at some Of the plantations below the city. On ac count of be lateness of the crop plant ers fear that the depredations of these birds will be greater this year than usual. No one unfamiliar with the subject can have any idea of the im mense amount of rice consumed by the birds, and when they begin their at tacks, with the grain just formed , and continue then through the subsequent stages of growth, it is quite common to lose as much as ten per cent of the crop from this cause alone. The Charlotte News says that the most gigantic milling enterpri.-e in the hole South, outside of New Orleans. is located in Charlotte. Ihe plant of the company is located on a tract of 96 acres of ground. The plant cost over $200,000. and every dollar of it is Char lotte money. One citizen alone took S65 000 stock at the start. The business of tbe company will not stop at the manufacture of oil and fertilizers. It naturally fol'owa that vast quantities Of waste will result from the manipulation of 150 tons of se I per day. which could not be disposed of very advantageously. But the company has arranged for all th.s. They wil' establish a cattle yard on so much of the buildings, and will feed 1,000 head of western cattle. They expect to make this branch of their in iustry realize handsome returns, as their facilities for fattening cattle will be unsurpass-- d. " Durham Globe: U. R. Kenyon, a wealthy young man from Rochester. New York, came to Clinton several months ago and established a bank which became very successful in its operations. About a week ago he was prostrated with typhoid fever, and for -everaliay s had been in a delirious condi1 on. In tbe very early hours of tbe mo ung yesterday the young man who was wai jg by his bedside left the room for a few momenta to get some medicine from an adjoining apartment and when he returned he found yOuDg Kenyon under the bed raving and re fusing to come out. His attendant at temped to pull him out, but being un able to do so drew the bedsted across the room. At thin Kenyon jumped from the floor and with a wild cry leaped from the open window of the room, falling in a bruised and senseless condition to the ground below. He was taken up unconscious by bis friend and parried to his room where he died in two hours. I saw several places wherrj Craven could have borne off the premium. In Scuppernong grapes and seedlings she could have excelled, and Mr. Havens' pecans would have taken the pre mium offered for a lot of not less than twelve. By oo means the least notable exhibit was a Bide show of a baby boy ten months old who t i the beam at fifty one pounds and eight ounces. He is named Zebulon Vance Tise, and is the pro uct of Forsyth county some six miles from the city. He was born the 15th of October last and bids fair to be as large as his mother by Christmas. The youngster is healthy in appearance, well formed ana proportioned and sim ply a little giant. He crawls about the floor and pulls himself up by n chair just like other babies of similar age. Up to eight weeks old he was not unu sually large, but at that age he set aff to growing and has succeeded very far beyond the averige of us. The parents will take him to the Stite Fair at Ral eigh this fall The next fruit fair will be at Mc. ; Holly, when it is hoped the eastern por j tion of the State will enter the compe I tition. C.
