There weio cattle browsing the land was par tially cleared. Rut about one hundred yards beyond the cattle, thongtisome of the cows had bells on, there was a beautiful buck I He stood head on: his quick ear or scent had detected the presence ot a more dangerous enemy than the cows with bells on. Harding had nothing but a mu.zel-loadiug rifle, but one with which he had done some fine work. He was a mau of quick thought aud of quick ac tion. He glanced along the barrel. In his crawling over the hill he had broken off the forward sight of the rifle, but the magnificent deer stood there, head erect, and just ready to jurnp. Harding was bound to shoot, and he pointed the rifle as best be could. The report startled the cows into a run, but the buck fell as stiff as a log. IlardiDg shouted to his triend and ran to cut the deer's throat with his hunt ing knife. He came up to where the animal had falleD, but he was gathering up and was nearly erect, though rather dizzily, and was be ginning to get away. This would never do. Harding was as quick cf action as of thought, and he made a grab for the buck and just suc ceeded iu getting a good hold of the short tail of the beast. Here he hung for dear life deer death it proved and the buck began to bound away. The ground was covered with hummocks and logs, but Harding hung on. Here he passed in his story. The buck kicked as onlv n deer can kick with those migutv long legs of his. A Philadelphia woman who at tended a reception given to George Matdonald, the English novelist, when in this country, tells a queer fad indulged in by the author's wife. The latter wore, wherever she went, a belt from which dangled what appeared to be a number of golden balls. During a conversa tion wnh the novelist the Philadeh phian happened to ask how many children he had : "One the wrong side of twelve,'' was the answer. "I suppose you mean thirteen?" I "No. midame; 1 have only eleven." ! Then Mr. Macdonald called his j wife, who opened the golden balls l ( winch proved to be lockets) and showed the photographs of all her children. An officer in the ISengal army had a favorite elephant, which was sup plied daily in his presence with a certain allowance of food, but being compelled to absent himself on a journey, the keeper of the beast diminished the ration of food, ami the animal daily became thinner and weaker. When its master re turned the elephant exhibited the greatest signs of pleasure. The feeding time came, and the keeper laid before it the former allowance of food, which it divided into two parts, consuming one immediatelv and leaving the other untouched. The officer, knowiDg the sagacity of his favorite, saw immediately the fraud that had been committed and made the man confess his crime. PIMPLES OS!
