Mors Improvements
There is hardly a time when there is
not some work going on at the ceme
tery to increase the neatne and beauty
of the plao. The cemetery committee
a short while back had the main avenue
nicely graded and thickly covered with
pulverized shell rock, and now other
walks are receiving tbe same treatment.
A new fence is about to be put up be
twetn the cemetery atd the private j
property 00 the Dortheatrn pirt. The ,
lumber foJ it it on the ground and work
on it will bjgin today. The rock wall
is to be extended on the side between
the at met ry and tbe macadamized
road. A portion of tbe material ha
arrived only two more cargoes are
needed to complete the amount re
quired to finish the wall, and as scon
a they are received tbe wall will be
built. Tbe owners cf tbe lot are
taking commendable pride in keeping
them ia order and many of them bare
had Mr. J. K Willi to surround them
with pretty and durable fences and
place monuments over the graves of
tbelr departed relative. It i gratifying
to taa these evidence of remembrance
and affection as manifested by the care
teitowed. upon this place so dear to
ns all.

Can a member of our late county

who has taken a thorough course of

do credit to old, experienced band.
ProfeMor Skinr er is to be congratulated
on securing tuch accomplished and

Not every one who has a brain filled
with college lore possesses the ability
to present that information in a clear
manner to others, but Professor Skinner
has the happy faculty of doing so in a
way that fixes it in the minds of tbe
pupils and the reeult is that they learn
rapidly, and not only does he secure th
beet teachers possible, but be giyes hi
persooal supervision to all the departc
ments and impresses his assistant with
the methods that his long experienca.
has convinced him, are most effective,
lie dots uot follow edd methods blind
ly, but ruDs his school according to bis
own ideas though they may differ maCeri
tlly from general usage. In history be
begins fir.t with that of Njrth Carolina,
after that he takes the history of the
United States, then that of English and
afterwards general history. Contrary
to what is often done he gives the home
study tbe preference.
He pursues s somewhat similar course
on geography. lie first gives tbe
learner a broad and general idea of tbe
world, its shape, its continents, etc., by
globes and hemispheres, aad when it
comes to particulars he start witb tba
geography of New Berne, then in nc-

Calisthenic exercises are practiced

is also given tho male students. They

Captain, G. M Johnson, of Beaufort

2J lieutenant, B. II. Melton, of Pollocks

The building in which Vance Acad-
1 emy is located wis designed for Nor
thern vie r.ors, and could scarcely have
been better arranged to meet the re
quirement cf ttie school if it had been
built fnr the purpose. It contains
thirty nine well-lighted and well-ven-tiiated
rooms, nicely fitted up with
conveuient closets, giving ample ac
coiumoda ion for a large camber of
scholars. The portions used by the
male and female boarding pupils are
entirely separate, as are also the yards.
A large room the whole length of tbe
building has recently been fitted upfor
the whole school whenever it is neces-
also at 9 o'clock every Sunday morn
ing. Everything U now better arranged for
Ruccestful work than ever before; Rood
rules have been eet.bl iht d . t he hours
are regular, the discipline is strict, and
the dining room and sleeping apirt
menu are all in the same building, thus
enabling both Prof. Skinner and bis
wife to keep a constant oversight of the
pupils; and those who wish to place
their children in an excellent pebool
where they can re-tt satisfied that they
are in good hands and receiving kind
and thoughtful attention, would do
well to examine the advantages that
Vance Academy offers, and in bectow
ing rheir patronage let meritorious
local institutions, other things being
equal have preference over those at a
distance.
Can a True Democrat Assist a Repub

Editor Journal: I see in the Jour
nal of the 15th inst. an article written
by a Democrat on signing bonds, which
contain faota that oannot be set aside
Thsj Democratic party in this county
will never get in the ascendency if
I these obl'ging Democrats don't quit
I signing Republican bonds.
j i havie heard it frequently talkeJ that

Some of oar Republioan friends
may think this a little tough. But
however conservative my view may
have ben on this subjeot in the past,
it is time to oall a bait. With the revo
lutionary and obstructive course of tbe
Republicans and tbe high hand of
Speaker Reed, and the infamous Force
bill and the unseating of our legally
elected Congressmen without hardly
giving them a hearing. With all these
things before me bow can I sympathise
with a set of man who in tbeir hearts
endorse these revolutionary measures.
As for my part, I cannot see bow any

Smaller Farias Larger Yields.
Editor Journal: I see in your Sun
day's paper that Mr. E. M. Street, of
this county, had gathered twenty-five
bales of ootton oft. of twenty-two acres
and bad tl)l ona more bale in tbe field.
This i seems to ma should attract the
attention of the .Farmers' Alliance. The
man wbo makes a bale to tbe acre can
stand low prioe if any one can. No
movensent by tbe aid or even tbe an b
treaanry bill could likely double the
current prioea of cotton) bat tbefra. is
tome method by. which the yield per
acre can be doubled, and Mr- Street
appears to hare hit upon it. A Jones
county planter lold me he had been for
several years decreasing hi acreage
and bis yield was correspondingly in
creasing. Well fertilised, well tilled.
be aaid bis diminished acreage gave
-him a much better return than former
ly. . With tbe excellent organization of
the Alliance a great deal may be done
towards increasing tbe products of the
soil br tbe taocees of Mr. Street is
phenomenal. The treasure house of
nature, la accessible to all and tne key
to it witbia the reach of every farmer,
and no aid of human government will
prove half so beneficent as the govern
ment of tbe universe if properly applied"!
to. Larger yield per acre is tbe key
note; and if the Alliance will thorough

Heayy Forgeries Cause a Big Failure
in 'ew York.
New York, November 17. The as
signment cf Mills, Robeson & Smith
brought about by the forgeries of the
junior partner, was formally filed in
the county clerk's offloe today, '''he
firm assigned to Wm. A Watson, with
a preference tj Edward Sanderford for
S15.000, and to Jmee H. Fay of Si, 000
Albert H. Smith, the guilty member of
the firm, who was arraigned in police
court this morning, wa remanded until
tomorrow.
The remarkable frauds perpetrated
by broker Albert H. Smith was the talk
of the street today. The creditor of
the firm ruined by hi peculation will
hold a meeting tomorrow afternoon,
and at that time a statement of the
Arm 's liabilities and assets will be pre
sented. Smith' forgeries amount to about
8240 000. and his private loan to about
S140 000: hi asset $30 000. A partial
schedule of Smith' forgeries shows
that the actual value of the securities
pledged is in motl case 10 or 12 per
cent of the amount loaned on them.
For example, a loan of 825.000 was ob
tained on securities worth $2,800, and
for loans aggregating 8147,400, the se
curities pledged are actually worth
only 818,600, the certificate having
been raised to teu time that amount.

of chronio piles, of constipation, of
varied forms of women's complaints, of

and oft times fatal diseases. Tha evi

of these mild, pleasant, harmless and
yet benign Humphreys' Specifics, are
to be found upon every side. The
slightest inquiry among your acquain
tances or friends will reveal cases of
cures of which you have been ignorant.
Thousands use them, even for years.
without the fact being known except to
one's family or most intimate friends.
Thev are content to be cured but mostly
prefer to keep tbe fact of tbeir infirmity
or tbe treatment and cure to them
selves, except for some adequate or
proper reason. We have reoeived fens
of thousand of unsolicited testimonials
of cures in the course of over thirty
one years' business. We could easily
fill volumes with them. Some few we
occasionallv Dublish. but we prefer in
general that each should make tbe
simple trial for one's self and be thus
convinced rather than from tha test!

or potent suoh testimony might be.
