I.ovoll, of Roston l'bifty Years in Iiusiiu'-,s. JOHN F. LOVF.I.I.. The golden anni veriry ot the business career of Mr. John P. Lovell, one of Boston's most widely-known business men, was ap propriately celebrata.l in thit city recently. Speaking of Mr. Lovell's career, which mightwell "point a moral an 1 adorn a tle," th3 Turf, Field and Farm shvm "John P. LiTvall was bora in F, nt Ih-ai 1 tree, Mass.. July 2", 130. At the age of eleven he left school and went to wori; in a cotton factory. On5 year later his mother opened a boarding house in Boston and John had another year of schooling. With this scant equipment, but with an indomitable determination to succeel in life, the boy of thirtetn entered into the arena of life's battle. "The years that followed witnessed the lad making a noble fight against the dis advantages with which he was surrounded. After an eventful life in various lines of trade, he settled down to the gunsmith business in the employ of A. B. Fairbanks, to whom he became apprenticed at a weekly salary of $2, with f25 yearly allowance for clothes, and a raise of fifty cents per week and tiO per year additional clothing allow- ! ance for each succeeding year untt' the age of twenty-one. ! "The qualities which in later years de . veloped tne man of large enterprise anl un 1 swerving integrity took firm root in the gun , smith boy, and Mr. Fairchild was so grati fied with his success that, when John was twenty years of aje, tne old gentleman voluntarily took bim in as a partn3i- with or.e balf interest. At this time John had not a :' dollar in the wo:-ld. "Thus, fifty years ago, was formed the firm which to-day is represente I by the greit house of John P. Lovell Arms Co , whose , business radiates throughout tbe worid. j "John's profit for the first year was $i0o In j 1841 Mr. Fairchild died and Leonard Grover ' entering, the firm became G rover & lyjvell. I In 1844 John P. Lovell bought out his part ner's shars and with rdiirwal zral push? I his business toward the high mark of suc cess which he had set before himself in his youth. As the years sped by, his name and fame traveled from cirv to city. Through the ranks of tho sporting goods dealers of America he he we 1 his way from the lowest to the highest place of success, until with honest I pride he felt his feet securely planted 011 tbe I high ground to which in boyhood days, when Sor and uuknowD, his ambition had aspired, is family had grown up around him in the ! intervening years, an I he now- beheld his ' sons, developed into men ready to a-:sist him in his old age to carry to a further success : the enterprise b?gun years before. I "In 1874 the business was remove 1 to the ' present spacious buildings iu Boston which are located in the business centre of the city. ! "Here daily may bs seen John P. Lovell, no longer the young man whose steps are elastic in the pursuit of Jot'ty ambitions, but John P. Lovell the man of year-., who has trodden life's pathway through both the bitter and the sweet, and has emerged from its shadows and contests, a man of success both in the development of wealth auJo; character. ' TH EC0TT0N CROP REPORT. The Plnnl Opruril 'I'oo Kaplilly Wall lli( f.ir Itellrr I'rk'rl. 'The eollon returns of the Pepurtment of A gricu I lure tor February re pi 11 1 the estimated product, compared w iili last yenr, the propor tion sent from plantations and yield of lint to seed. The plants were prolific in bo'ling, opening so rapidly in the early autumn as to lax the capacity of the pickers and leave the cotton exposed to the weather, which was unusually moist. There is consequently a general complaint ot discoloration, and to some extent injury of the fibre. From the same cause an unusual amount of trash was gathered with the cotton that was thus ex posed. A consolidation of the country esti mates, as returned by n porters, makes 10C per cent, of the product of last year. The state 1 ve rages are as follows: North Carol ina which had a very small crop last year, 14; South Carolina, 100; Georgia, 10o; Florida, !'"; Ala bama, 1 u 1 ; Mississippi, ltW; Louisiana, If.j; Texas, 1'8; Arkansas, 102; Tennessee, 110. Some correspondents claim that there has been an organized effort to hold back the de livery of the crop, in the hope of belter prices; others report its rapid marketing to get the benefit of the higher rates of the opening season. It is possible that these causes were both operative, the one early in the season, the other later, counteracting the early move ment. The proportions sent from plantations are thus reported: North Carolina, M3 per cent.; South Carolina Georgia, bo, Florida, W; Alabama, Ni: Mississippi, M; Louisiana, 11.'; Texas, SO; Arkansas, j;; 1 eiinessee, Sj; general average, ST. The proportions of lint to seed is reported at ;I2 to S-i per cent., t lie better results being in the Atlantic Coast States, in Louisiana and Texas. CYCLONE IN ALABAMA.
