A CRASH IN A TUNNEL Two Trains Collide and Takes Fire. the Wreck j 81 Persons Lose Their Mv.. ami Seven Others are Severely Injureil A Itlls leartliis; Signal Hie Oitise. There was a collision at 7 o'clock the other morning hetxveen two trains in the fourth avenue tunnel at I.ighfy-sixth street in New York. What is known as a "shop train," consisting of empty cars, was being drawn to the Mott Haven yard. When, forsomeres son as yet unexplained, it came to a slop in the tunnel at i iighty-ti It h slreet. Train No. 10, Ihe New I lax ,-n local, w li ich left the ( i rand Central Depot at 7 o'clock, in charge of Fn gineer Fowler, Fireman Goodale and con ductor George H nteh inson, rn n into the rear of the standing "shop train." Six persons were Killed- tour in en. a w onian nnd a boy - -and sex en injured. Flames broke out a few moments afler the second col'ision. but they were soon gotten under control, when six dead and seven in jured were removed. The injured were taken to the Presbyterian Hospital. None of the passengers are known to be among the killed or injured. They are all I clieved to be employ ees ot the road. The passengers in the New Haven train were badly shaken up, but beytind somesliehf cuts and bruises none of them was badly hurt. Fngineer Fowler of the New Haven train said that when at Seventy-second street lie got the xvhite signal, xvhieh was Ihe signal tJ go ahead, there was no ringing of the belle, either, as is customary when Ihe danger sig nal is up. He xvas running at the rate of about 2U miles an hour on tlie Norlh-Oound track. He was fo close to the "shop train," before he was aware ot it that he telescoped it before he was hardly able to put on the air-brakes, 'fhe "simp train" consisted of seven car, including several s'-eepeis thnt had come into t lie ( Jra ud Cenl ral Depot early in the morning and were on the way to the repair shop, as is t lie custom after a trip. On th. telescoped ' shop train" there were probably a dozen or more employees bothol the road and of the W agner Company. One ot the boilies is that ot a woman. She was probably a scrubber. Claude Burard was on his way to work from ins home, at 21 East Kighty-fifth street, and heard a crash as if the building had fal len. The next moment he heard an agonized cry for help. Four young men xvho were in the neighborhood ran to M r. Burard 's side. They all rushed around to Kighty-fifth street, and took a ladder from a building in the course of erection, They placed it over the iron railing which surrounds the opening in the tunnel, and lowered itdown the opening whence the cries ot distress came. During the first filtcen minutes after the collision two explosions were heard, caused by the blowing out ot the cylinder heads of a locomotive. This xvas Ihe "liglit"loco-uotive which had no cars attached. It was thrown from the rails xvheu it collided with the New Haven train. Both the engineer and fireman escaped without .-erious injury. , The majority ol the dead were thought to be in the two rear cars. Atter the fire had been mastered the firemen w ith axes tried to clear away the debris so as to be able to vet at tiie bodies, ll was finally decided to pml the two cars apart, and the locomotive ot the New Haven train, with a tear and crash, partedthe two cars, drnxvingone of them about ten teet lioin tho other. In a heap of burned cushions, wood and iron the bodies were lotind and taken out and xvrapped in blankets. They were then placed side ly side on the south bound track. The bodies were burned beyond recognition. Parts ot someol the bodies xvere completely burned away. The persons killed numbered six four men, one woman and a boy. SENATOR WILSON DEAD. Tlit?
