Ji.uv many lives have been lost is y. i a matter uncertainty. Atirr.fi. .-buid-burst thrice repeated and wind almost a hurricane are what consum mated tin dread work. The storm appears to have swept in a vast circle of Northwestern Iowa, ui My two hundred miles in diainetrr, with ( hrr. ker as the center. Owi us; to t he destruction of wires and rail roads, only the vauoM reports have been re ceived fioiu the devastated territory to ihe. west, north and south. I lie damage In Cbero ke... takiii'j into account the relativclv small size of the town, is enormous. Most of tiie destruction in liciokee was wrotieht by the e-ttmordinary rise intheSioux river, resulting from the tremendous down pour of water from the sky. Some idea erf" the immensity and suddenness of the flood can be inferred liom the fart that it carried oft', ap parently without an effort, the bis; truss bridge on whic h the Illinois Central Knitroad crossed the river, and with the bridtre went four hun dred bet of trestle, on which the company 's tracks approached the river. The Little Sioux is at the liighet stai;c ever known. The best information indicates that the I ihiiois Central rails are under water con tinuously for many miles on tbeOnawa branch and that the havoc both to roadway aha bridges js something seldom paralleled in rail way histirv. Lvcry c.lort is being made to brine order out ot tin- eimos, hut the absence nf accurate information and the paralysis of transporta tion almost nullifies progress. It may be a week or mure before thr lull extent of tne dis aster is know 11. Other railroads besides the Illinois Central caa scarcely have escaped "reat damage, par ticularly tiie Chicjjo and Northwestern and the Chieatto, Milwaukee and St. Paul. As near as can be learned, the urea of the storm as tfixen has been, if anything, uuder-esti-inated. According to latest advices, the storm falls little short of a great tri-state affliction, ufiei-tin noi only alamo stretch of countrj in Iowa.' but larj,re portions, also, of Minnesota and Nebraska. MAKING RAIN TO ORDER. :r, Itatlier, Trying to See If It Ian Ke Done by Balloons. Further experiments were made by Colonel Pyrenforth. of the Pepartmeiii of Agriculture, on the outskirts ot Washington, in testing the feasibility of exploding balloons charged with gases at a considerable height in the air, with the object of discov ering the practicability of exploding dynamite in a like manner, and its effects in producing rain in case of drouth. The balloons, about 12 feet in diameter, charged with two parts of hydrogen and one at oxygen, were sent up to an elevation of about l.-'tti feet, and then exploded hv means of an electric current transmitted on a" slender wire connected with the large pear-shape air essfd. Jhe first experiment was made 011 a single balloon, the concussion produced by the explosion sounding like the report of a" six inch rifle on shipboard, the gases causing the complete collapse of the balloon, ami at the same time sending toward the earth myriads ot bright gold sparks like those of fireworks.
