Three arch' s .'ecornted the streets on the line of march, each bearing quotations from Ceu. Farly ske'ehed tlie life and military career of 1, en . .1 ackson, remarking upon his tenacity and courage and his resolution in the face of difficulties. He spoke of the inriueuee exerted by tier,. Jackson upon the youth he trained. The temper of the oration was u--.elerat", m a rule, and little more than a eulogy of the dead soldier. Mrs. Jackson occupied a seal on the stand and a touching incident of the day was her meeting with her grandchildren. ThoraasanJ Julia Christian, whom she had not seen for a long time. She embraced them warmly and appeared much affected. During the delivery of the oration she held a little boy iu her arms. The possession reformed at the closa of the literary exercises and marched to the ceme tery, forming in rear of it at 1! P. M. Soon alterw ardsasalute was fired by the Rockbridge Artillery, and as the guns boomed Julia Jack son Christian, grand. laughter of the (ieneral. pulled the cord which released the veil and exposed the mouumeut to view. The militarv and civic organizations then passed in view of the statue through the cemetery, dropping out of line as they reached their quarters. THK STATl'K. The statue stands in'a circle in iheccntre of the City Cemetery on Me.'ii street, a square containing about four acres of ground well set off with giant trees which hide the statue from view except in the rear. The site is a slight mound crowning an elevation, over looking the surrounding country and com manding a good view of rich roliing'hills and valleys. The sculptor is a Virginian, Kdward V. Valcutime, who designed the Lee monu ment. I he statue porl rays Jackson with uncovered head leaning 0:1 his sword and left leg. and look ing out upon a field of battle. I n the right hand at his side is a field glass. The figure is clad in the full uniform of a Confederate lieutenant-general, with the gold lace on the sleeves distinctly visible, and with heavy military boots and spurs. The carriage, easv in the attitude, is one of close observation with the right few it advanee. ready and alert for instant vigorous action. The scabbard of sword upon which the gauntletted left hand rests bears the letters "Fnited Slates, "a his torical fact, as it was modeled from Jackson's own sword. Beneath the pedestal is a vault containing six sepulchre chambers surrounded by a cir cular grass plot, around which is a driveway with four approaches. The general effect ot the structure is imposing. THK M F. Ml lit I AI. ASSOCIATION. The statue was erected by the Jackson Memorial Association, composed of soldiers w ho served under Gen. Jackson and incor porated under the Virginia statutes. It was organized in 1SS4, with G.W. C. Lee as Presi dent and John C. Boude, Secretary. A despatch from Flora, HI-, says: The en tire James family, consisting of four grown persons and an infant, were burned to death, or first murdered and then their bodies burned within two miles of this city. The house was an ordinary log structure. The family con sisted of Henry James, aged forty-five years; his wife, Mrs. Elizabeth James, aged forty three years; one son. Dean Jiunes, aged eighteen years, and one married daughter, Minnie Chancy, aged twenty-five years, and her six mouths' old babe. Iu the north bedroom of theshed were discovered the charred remains of the babe, w ith its little head burned almost entirely ufl and only the crumbling white ashes of bones to tell wdiere the little arms and feet had been attached to the body. With one stride to the left the body of the infant's mother came into view, and two steps farther to the left two charred bodies, supposed to be those of the father and mother, appeared. There were positively no features left for identification only the "ghastly outlines ot two forms left by the incinerated bodies. Hy one wns found a ring of keys w ith a tab marked "M rs. James. " Near the other an empty revolver and three pieces of silver money. Near the middle of the reception-room were the unrecognizable remains of another body, supposed to be that of the son.
