The pre eminent adaptability of this section to suoceesful trucking is iirmly established and generally acknowl edged ct iii-m'- and abroad, but the poeeibiluit. of : ruit culture arc scarce ly dreamed uf e ven by our own citi rens. We are ltd iu thet- nil -ctioas by the sight of the tine apples displayed for sale at several New Berne stores, of the variety known as Northern Spy , which were grown by Mr. J. J. Wolfenden at his farm near the city, some of them measuring eleven inchee in circumfer ence. Beside being large they are pretty, juicy, well flavored and every whit as good as Uoee obtained from the North, and though good apples have been selling in our market at from 25:. to 50c. per bushel, Mr. Wolfenden finds ready sale for theee, owing to their superiority, at 81.00 per buehel or $3.50 per barrel. Mr. Wolfenden has a good orchard of five hundred young, thrifty trees of Ue choicest varieties, heavily laden with beautiful, well-formed fruit. Promi nent among theee varieties are the kind of which we have just spoken and the Buckingham and Ben Davis, fine, large apples, which ripen later. Mr. Wol fen den's estimate Is Uat wiU trees Uat have reached maturity one thousand bushels to the acre can easily be raised. and he has fully demonstrated that as great sucoess will attend their culture bare as anywhere, tbe essential points being to get Ue best varieties and take Ue proper care of them. Pears are never abundant in this market, but those Uat are sold here are splendid, aod they are a profitable fruit to raise. We notice several trees of Ue Ducheese de Aogouleme variety in Mr. Eugene Tucker's garden, in this city, that are bearing profusely. I)vii;imlte Lxploioii sproads t!:c Fiitmes Fifty-Five lluuses Burned lx)ss Half Million Uollnrs. Jacksonville; Fla., Aug. 13. Jack sonville haa hod one of the biggest fires in her history. At 11:05 last niht an alarm was turned in from the three story crockery house of R. Knight, in the center of the business portion of the oity. The heat ignited the Hubbard block, the largest building in tho city, containing the Western Union Tele graph office, the Southern Havings and Trust Company, the Jacksonville Light Infantry Armory, and tbe telephone oentral offices. Thence it jumped across the street to the Seminole club house, three storiss high, 6nd com municated to the Smith Building and tbe Mattier Building, In the Smith Building a large amount of dynamite had been stored. This ex ploded and started fires through the blocks away to the northwest. The effect of the explosion was stunning. Men fell in the streets and many were Injured. Plate glass for four and five squares was shattered and the sidewalks covered with broken glass. The sound was not heard, but tbe effect of the ex plosion was seen fifty miles away. The firemen could have stopped the fire at this point but for Ue explosion. That rendered them about helpless. Residences, stores, and hote!6 broke into flames, and tbe fire became a ter rible conflagration, and was not stopped until after daylight. The larger buildings burn-d are Knight, s crockery Btore, the Hubbard Block, the Seminole Block, the Smith Building, the Mattier House, tho Freed man's bureau building, the Tremont Hotel, Hotel Placide, Iiitzeweller resi dence, the Chelsea House, St. Joseph's Academy, the Tilton Honae. the Murray & Baker carriage repository, end nearly all the buildings from and including Simmons & Scott's shoe store to cud including Lloyda Brothers' grocery store corncrof Church and Main etaeets. Tho total number of busldiogs of all kinds burnt is lifty-five, and the total loss about S500,000. The insurance in not cbtainablo iut now. It will he small compared with tho total Iojs.
