A London House Cleaned out of Over a Million Dollars. The banking world of London has just been startled by the announcement that an import ant bank robbery has taken place in the city. The po'icc and bank officials are trying to keep the matter us quiet as possibl", so that the entire facts in the case are not obtainable at present. It ia known, however, thnt the institution that has suffered is the London and Westminster B ink (limited), No. 11 Lathbury, E. C, an important establishment, having over 1 branch houses iu London. The money stolen, it would appear, consisted of a large I nrcel of bills remitted from the country banks to the London and Westmin ster Rank. The thief or thieves must have cleverly watched for the proper opportunity to accomplish the robbery and to have gained access to nn apartment nearthe nigf) entrance to the bunk. This apartment was easy of ac cess from the street, and t4ie parcel of bills is supposed fo have been stolen while the bank officials were busily engaged in another apartment in going over the accounts of last week 's settlement. Both Mr. William Astle, the town manager of the bank, an I Mr. H. F. Billinghurat, t lie country manager, decline to make any state ment as to the actual los incurred by the London nnd Westminster Rank, but it is cur rently reported that the amount stolen is not less than 75 i.UO, and that it may be as much as l,2."ni,00(). Tiie bank oftieers.the city police authorities and Criminal Investigation Department of Scotland Yard are putting forth the utmost exertions in order to effect the captur of the thieves. Notice ol the robbery has been sent to the police centres throughout the British Isles and on the continent, and the sailing of every pnssengw vessel is being watched. Notice of the robbery has also be n sent to all the banks upon which the bills were dra.wn, but the police theory is that no attempt w ill be made to change the bills iu this country, but that the thieves will have recourse to the continent, where the presence of so many wealthy travelers lroni England and Ihe United Slates makes such transactions ensier than in this country. The robbery of the London and Westminster Bank recalls the fact that on February 16 last & siiniliar daring bank robbery took place in the same ne ghboi liood. Upon that occasion a stylishly-dressed man accosted in the Na tional Provincial Bank of England, No. 112 Bishopgate-Within, a clerk from the lyondon branch ol the Bank of Scotland. This clerk was in the act of making the deposit of nearly frill, 0(H) at the public counter of the National Provincial Bank, and when Bpoken to by the stranger he turned toward him and replied to his question. Though this conversation only lasted a mo mentor so, nn accomplice of the stylish 6trnnger snatched from the clerk a wallet con taining Rank of England notes to the amount named and decaniptd. In the confusion which i'ollowid both the strargcrand h s accomplice, supposed hy the police to be expert American bank-snenks, made their esc ipe. The booty thus obtained included Bank of England notes of various denominations from l,D00 down ward, and, so far ns known, neither the thieves nor their plunder have since been heard of. It w ill also be remembered thnt quite re eenCy it was reported that the Bank of Eng land had been robbed of 250,000 (1, 250,(10(1), a statement which was denied by the officers of that bank. At the time of the National Provincial Bank robbery the police authorities claimed thnt it was the "biggest haul" of money made by "bauk-snee.ks" in a generation. MARKETS.
